How long does morning sickness last?

Generally morning sickness lasts until the 13th of 14th week of pregnancy although some women feel better before this and others have morning into the second trimester or even into the third. There is no clear reason why pregnant women suffer from morning sickness, but it is one of the most common symptoms and it is believed that anywhere between 50 and 90% of expectant moms have morning sickness at some point during the first trimester. One of the reasons morning sickness results in the first trimester could be related to the pregnancy hormones that surge and cause the stomach muscles to relax.

It is called morning sickness because many expectant mothers have the most severe symptoms first thing in the morning. But, morning sickness can happen at any time of the day or even occur all day long. Some women dont feel sick per se, but they do take offense to foods with strong odors like coffee or tuna which may make nausea more severe.

Women who are affected by morning sickness hope that it will go away by the end of the first trimester, but while they are waiting they try some of the following tricks. These may work for you or they may not, but many women do find some relief when from one or more of the following suggestions.

First, you should make sure you stay clear of anything that might make you feel sick. This includes certain foods, odors, or anything that might bring the nausea on. Next, consider having six small meals a day rather than three large ones. When you have something in your belly you are less likely to feel nauseous. Another tip is to always have a little something to eat before you get out of bed. Nausea is at its worst first thing in the morning, so if you eat a little something and then get out of bed slowly you might conquer the nausea at least some of the time. Also, make sure you increase your fluid intake. You dont want to get dehydrated while you are pregnant and if you are vomiting and not drinking much that is a possibility. Drink juice, suck on Popsicles, or anything to increase your fluids.

Some women find relief from morning sickness when they wear a motion sickness band. The reason why is that the band presses on an acupressure point and reduces the nausea symptoms. Ginger ale, cookies, or ginger capsules might help allay some of the nausea and it is perfectly healthy during pregnancy. Another option is to always suck on a sucker or piece of hard candy.
