Our Girls

Our daughters are our pride and joy,
We didn't miss not having a boy -
Tomboys both when they were small
But ladylike as they grew tall.

Our eldest was the perfect babe
Who slept and gurgled, slept and played.
Big brown eyes and dark brown curls
She was prettier than any other girls.

Of course she was - for she was ours
We sat and looked at her for hours.
What joy, what pride, it grows and grows
I wonder if it actually shows?

She learnt to toddle all dressed in frills
But loved the tumbles and the spills.
Climbing trees and digging holes,
She'd gather spiders, snails and moles.

She looked so cute when I took her to school
Clean face, tidy hair and dressed to rule.
Then I'd pick her up and was always amazed
At the scruff that was mine with knees all grazed.

Suddenly, without warning or song
Our signet had grown into a swan.
All grace and elegance, and Oh! so prim
And our tomboy? - what happened to him?

Now she's an adult and our nest she has flown
Married with a husband and child of her own.
We hope her life will always be
As enriching as it was for her father and me.

Our youngest arrived and was just as good
At sleeping and playing and eating her food.
She had big brown eyes, but no brown curls,
She was blond - which is OK and cute for girls.

As lovely as her sister, but different in style.
The tomboy in her lasted a much longer while.
Right through to her teens, an imp she did stay
What fun, what humour and personality.

With hundreds of friends, our house would abound
A stream of teenagers - always around
Bringing their problems, their joys and their fears
We tried to mediate and dry all the tears.

Now she is grown too, but still lives at home
With a good job and good prospects all of her own.
But she is still our "baby" and always will be
Our "little-un" to her father and me.

I wonder who and when she will marry
Could it be Tom, Dick or even Harry?
We will just wait and see what's in store
What a shame now that we didn't have more.
