What Happened to My Baby?
You're wearing the gown, covered with teddies
That you wore home from the hospital.
But,
it's almost too small.
From where you lay, I can
almost see
Your crossed feet, peeking out below.
The neck is unbuttoned to allow you
To move around,
to breathe evenly.
Your arms just barely fit the
sleeves.
(It was a struggle to put them on.)
Your silken
hair, soft as angel breath
And scented with the scent
of heaven,
So fuzzy and shiny, attracts my
attention.
Next, your delicately curved eyebrows, perfectly arched,
Outlining eyes of deepest blue.
Your long eyelashes frame
them to perfection.
The delicate curve of your cheeks
Down to your soft, rounded chin
Always causes me to
gaze at your rapturous beauty
With wonder - Do you
look most like Daddy or Mommy?
Something causes you
to smile
Your rosebud mouth during sleep.
Is it
me? Do you smell mommy?
Your hand reaches up and
encircles my finger.
You squeeze it so tight! Are you
dreaming?
Fluttering eyes. . . You make a sound
While
sucking your imaginary meal.
Everything you do
enraptures my soul
And elevates my love to the heights of
heaven.
So perfect, so beautiful,
And yet, changing every
second.
All too soon this baby girl,
Angel and fulfillment
of my dreams,
Will become a more independant and
mature form of herself,
Foreign, but also
familiar.
What shall the future hold
For my innocent, precious
girl?
I wish that our moment, here, now,
Could somehow
go on forever.....
I am going to miss this baby
girl
Sleeping on my chest,
Sucking on my
breast,
Playing, learning and loving.
Why do
babies grow up?
Will I be a good mom then?
The future
looks both scary and exciting for us.
It's undecided,
but full of hope.
This moment, here and now, will
remain with me forever.
I have memorized it in my
soul.
The image of a baby in constant evolution,
Although in peaceful sleep,
Silently growing into
her potential.
But, also stuck between the era of
infancy and childhood-
Asleep in a gown that is too
small!
