I Heard a Child Today
I heard a child cry today,
pain from a skinned-up knee.
His mommy gently cleaned the wound
then held it up for him to see.
I heard a child laugh today.
His daddy touched his nose
then he made a funny face
and sprinkled him with the garden hose.
I heard a child squeal with glee
when his grandma tickled his chin.
He gave her a great big hug and kiss
then jumped down to play again.
I heard a child giggle today
when his grandpa lifted him high
into the air then down to the ground
then back up into the sky.
I heard a child sing today
a song he made up himself
while he put his toys away
back upon the shelf.
I heard a child pray today
when it was time for bed.
He first told Jesus, "Goodnight"
then rested his tiny head.
I heard a mother weep today
at her son's simple prayer.
She tucked him in so tenderly
then tousled his wavy hair.
"Sleep well my son, throughout the night
and may your dreams be sweet."
God gave this child in our home
to make our lives complete.
