Late Night Flight

Another 2am take-off,
taxiing down
twilight hallway
with newborn baggage.
My frequent flyer
steps
criss-cross livingroom landscape,
eyelids lower like window shades,
baby
brought to upright position,
all burps to be extinguished,
my brain
switches to automatic pilot.
I brace through tearful
turbulance,
cradling my carry-on cargo
with rhythmic bounces
to counteract colic
shock,
motion sickness diaper
straddled over shoulder
just in case.
We’re
cruising at an attitude
of two hours sleep
through the groggy
atmosphere,
but soon I hear the easy drone
of her
enginebreathing…
blanketflaps down,
last bank turn begun,
cleared for final descent
into
her bassinet.
