We had our growth study this week. If this is accurate, and I know they can
be wrong, we are looking at a baby at least as big as Olivia was. With her
being 9 lb 6 oz this could be a large baby. We grow them big in this family
and I seem to be no exception! My brother was 9-lb, I was 5-lb 8 oz at 33
weeks, my cousin was 10 lb and all of the cousins were in the 8-9 lb range.
My husband was over 8-lb and his mother is 90-lb soaking wet and smoked and
drank throughout the pregnancy (before it was considered bad). We have a few
decisions to make it seems.
With Olivia the labor failed to progress and the reason they gave was CPD-
cephalea-pelvic disproportion. The doctor said he didn't think I could
deliver a baby over 8 lb after looking at me during my section. I called to
speak with him (we aren't seeing the same group this time around) but he is on
vacation. I will talk to him next week. I want to ask him his impression of
mu capability of delivering a large baby and what he truly saw. CPD can be a
catchall diagnosis with a failure to progress in labor. It also can be
positional. There have been women who couldn't deliver a 7-lb baby in a "bad"
position but go on the deliver a 9-lb baby in a correct position with a VBAC
(Vaginal Birth After a Caesarean).
I was told that I have many options, a scheduled caesarean or VBAC among them.
I could also shoot for an early induction. We will have another growth study
at 37 weeks and see how the baby has grown. I am terrified that I truly am
too small and the baby will start to descend and get stuck. My girlfriend had
this happen to her with her son and he had to be resuscitated for 4 minutes
before they got him going again. What a nightmare!
There are risks associated with all of our options so now we just wait…and
hope I go into labor in the next week or two. Right now they are saying he
(or she) is already 6 lb!!! I have had a few false alarms already so maybe we
will be lucky!
Oh! George and I were looking at the ultra-sound and think we saw penis and
testicles. Who knows though? I want to be surprised!
