Well, this virus has certainly taken hold of me! I had to take the
entire week off work and spent most of it either in bed or in the tub.
Every now and then I'd try to do some housecleaning but I'd only last
about twenty minutes before collapsing in bed again. The doggies have
been really happy to have someone home all week and they've been more
affectionate than usual. David is getting the virus as well but he
seems to be able to fight it off better. They say that pregnancy makes
it harder for a woman to kick any colds or flu - they weren't kidding.
On Friday I had a very small bleed which would not have alarmed me at
all if I wasn't at high risk for miscarriage. Since it was getting
really close to the weekend I called my GP, who wasn't in, and then the
special pregnancy unit for some guidance. The nurse, Alice, at the SPU
called me back and advised me to take it easy on the weekend, no
lifting, and no working until I saw them for my appointment on Tuesday.
She also advised that if the bleeding increased and/or was accompanied by
cramping to go immediately to the emergency department. My GP called
back shortly after and backed up the directions given by the SPU. I
called work yet again to let them know I would be missing a shift
(Thankfully we get a lot of sick days) and then crawled back into bed.
There was no more bleeding after that small bit so I really didn't worry
about it.
On Saturday my mom and her husband arrived from Peterborough to join us
for lunch to celebrate our anniversary and David's birthday. We had
planned this for a few weeks so I figured I'd just take it easy but I
didn't realise just how tired it would make me. My mom arrived with
three great maternity tops for me which fit really well and will be
great for after the baby comes as well. I've been waiting to take our
mothers to the baby store just down the road from our house so we picked
up Dave's mom and all of us went to Storkland. I showed them the
Evenflow "On My Way" travel system stroller that I like and the "Arm's
Reach" bedside co-sleeper that attatches to the side of the bed to
provide a safe sleeping space for baby. This thing will be great for
breastfeeding at night - just reach over and grab the kid, latch it on
and away we go! Dave and I plan to have baby share our room for as long
as possible. We also checked out several different Dutalier
glider-rockers - they're addictive. We didn't spend too much time there
since I was really light-headed and hungry.
Off we went to David's parent's house to meet up with his father,
brother, wife and three kids. The 11 of us piled into two minivans to
go for lunch but we had to wait almost an hour between when we got
there, got seated, ordered, and were served because it was so busy.
Making a pregnant woman wait that long for food is asking for trouble.
I made the mistake of ordering deep-fried fish. TIP: Don't order
deep-fried anything in the first trimester. I was still feeling sick 12
hours later. After eating a few bites my stomach was not only queezy
but also full and I had that overwhelming desire to nap. Alas, I had to
wait for everyone else to finish and then we had to go back to my
in-laws for the cake they had specially made for me (lactose free cake
is hard to come by). The cake was beautiful but only a few bites
convinced me that it, too, was to be added to the anti-craving list.
When I did finally get home I fell asleep for two hours, woke up for an
hour and a half, and then went to bed for the night. Ahh, the exciting
life of a pregnant woman - eat, regret what you eat, sleep.
Until next time, |
