Breaking Nella by Alice Potenza My 2 year old Nella has perfected the word, "NO". She can say it while in the middle of being tickled laughing hysterically as she rolls around trying to get away from the TICKLE MONSTER, " I’M GOING TO TICKLE YOU." "NOOOO!" She can say NO while having a tantrum on the floor, arms and legs flailing about. "NELLA PLEASE GET OFF THE FLOOR! "NO" (arms folded firmly across her chest) She can say NO in that mischievious way when she is caught redhanded with one of the books from the book case in one hand and the pages 1-90 in her other. " NELLA DID YOU RIP THAT BOOK? " "NO" *batting eyes* She can say NO with tears streaming down her face with her bottom lip pursed out and quivering. "NELLA I’M SORRY. CAN I KISS YOU?" "NO" *sniff sniff* Nella can do "NO" and well. It began as any other day would but the ending was astonishing. After making pizza for dinner I gave the girls their choice of what TREAT they could have. Nella went for the candy. Tori went for the cookies and Stanzi snagged a cupcake. All quite satisfied with their choice, they ran off to catch the end of some TV show. I began to clear the dishes from the table and stacked them into the dishwasher. I then cleaned off the counters and washed off the flour and cornmeal left over from the pizza. Did I mention that I make a GREAT homemade pizza? Even Tori’s friend commented as she ate over, that my pizza was "AWESOME". As I was preparing to wrap up the leftovers I decided to just have one more bite. Naturally nothing I do goes unnoticed and my little Nella was right there to catch me stuffing my face. In a flash her hand was UP and the word, "TASTE" was clearly heard. So I took my slice and cut off a corner for her to share. We stood together leaning against the stove staring out at nothing in particular while both stuffing remnants of Pizza in our mouths. It was then that Nella noticed the cookie tin still plainly in sight on the counter. As quickly as her hand reached up for a "TASTE" of pizza it was Doubly quick to fling that pizza across the room in hopes of replacing it with a cookie. I was quite annoyed and although I was not going to force her to eat the pizza now, I was determined to get her to at least pick it up and hand it to me. " NELLA PICK UP THAT PIZZA." " NO" " NELLA PICK UP THAT PIZZA, NOW!" " NO" " NELLA PICK UP THE PIZZA AND GIVE IT TO MOMMA!. " NO" " NELLA PICK UP THE PIZZA OR YOU ARE GOING NIGHT-NIGHT!" "NO" " OK NELLA TIME FOR NIGHT-NIGHT. LET’S GO!" "NO" " PICK UP THAT PIZZA NOW!!!!!" At that moment something ASTONISHING happened. (REMEMBER THIS DATE ) Nella reached down and picked up the pizza without ever looking at me and handed it to me, her face deliberately looking away from mine. I almost didn’t quite know what to do with the pizza when I had it. Should I toss it out? Or should I keep it as a momento from such a special occasion? I high-fived her Dad who was watching this whole scene unfolding in front of him. Even he looked shocked at what he just saw. Did this really happen? Did I WIN??? YES YES I WON. I WON. I BROKE NELLA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I took the pizza and tossed it into the trash and turned to see my little Nella still slumped over on the floor. She looked up at me, her chubby cheeks flushed red, her big blue eyes already welling with tears yet to be. Her lips were quivering her mouth open but no sounds escaping. She heaved a gasp as she tried to stifle her cry. She looked beaten. I rushed to her and picked her limp body up and squeezed her tightly. Smothering her with kisses and telling her what a good girl she was. I LOST I LOST. I BROKE NELLA
