Not only because I am a former police officer, as well as a former prison correctional officer, but more importantly, because I have a wife and five daughters (have I gotten your interest yet)? You see, on Monday morning, November 1, I received a very disturbing email from a trusted source regarding a recent airing of an "Inside Edition" television broadcast. According to my source, the broadcast focused on (3) new gory, albeit honest appearing, methods that are being used to abduct females. And, get this! The abductions are not taking place in desolated, woody, or isolated areas with merely the faint light of the moon aglow. They are taking place at high traffic, well lighted malls, supermarkets, and parking lots...at both night and in broad daylight! To add insult to injury, so to speak, the lurers are actually boldly entering malls and supermarkets to lure their prey and, ultimately, intended victims! This gives new meaning to the phrase, "Hide in Plain Sight." But, here is the real kicker! Surprisingly, despite all of the safety and security alert measures, ads, and public service announcements that have been broadcast and printed repeatedly...day after day, month after month, even year after year, these particular methods seem to be foolproof and working! You will soon understand why. Their success was no more apparent than when "Inside Edition" conducted its own field test and sadly found that 10 out of 15 adult women could be lured, and actually went for these very same scams! The first tactic that is being utilized with great success is one where a handsome, well dressed, cleancut male approaches a female and represents himself as a television commercial producer. He states that his production crew are making a public service advertisement for drugs. He also informs her that, instead of a celebrity, he needs a "real" down-to-earth person in order to show emotion. He further goes on to state that if she can simply step outside where there is more lighting for filming, and where the crew is already waiting, production can begin immediately. Agreeing, then going outside, the female is abducted. The second tactic is similar to the first with the "producer" stating that his crew is shooting a "commercial" for a recognized product. Otherwise, the same scenario with the exact same results. Now, are you ready for the third? Brace yourself. Males equally would be heartfelt to fall for this one. A male rushes inside, appearing distraught, and tells an unsuspecting female that his little baby or child is not breathing. He then asks the prospective victim if she will assist him. Now, I put the question to you...what mother, or any woman for that matter, could resist this set-up? Not many, I can assure you. If I did not have my particular former law enforcement professions as a background, I doubt very seriously that, as a male, I could resist this temptation either...especially, since I also have children. In fact, very few males, especially fathers, would even think twice about assisting the "distraught father." And, so far, these are all ADULT females that are being approached. What is to happen to female teenagers and children who are, expectedly, naive? Ladies, I have two very blunt responsive actions for you to take for all three of the situations if you, unfortunately, encounter them. For the first two, resist the temptation to become a Hollywood star. Forget it! In the words of Jed Clampett, "It ain't worth it!" And, for the third, despite how heavy your heart is burdened to become a good samaritan, instead, direct the person to call 911 or consult the store manager for assistance. You will, most likely, be very glad that you did. Isn't it strange how society always seems to birth new ills during the holiday season? The irony of all of this is that I had also decided some months ago to begin distributing a video titled, "Self Defense for Women," which focuses on this very thing. It extensively instructs and empowers females, especially those who reside in urban/metropolitan cities where these types of risks are extremely high, to be prepared for life threatening crises. Now, it is no more apparent than ever that this vital information is greatly needed. It is not only a bonafide necessity, but information that every female (and every male, for that matter) needs to have. These new deadly evil approaches give me the same chilling sensation I experience each time I still see hitchhikers (male or female) on lone roads. At the risk of "selling," I must say that, as males, if we can give any worthwhile gift this season to the females we cherish, it should definitely be of a nature so as to enhance not only health, but also extend lives. It's sad enough that at this time of year the death toll significantly rises due to traffic fatalities. Again, as a former police officer and corrections officer, I've seen more of the seedy side of life and its results than I deserved or ever requested to see. I long ago lost the luxury of viewing life through ideological windows or rose-colored glasses. My alerting source is a female who also stated in her correspondence that she, initially, intended only to alert females, but was so awestruck by this news that she decided that alerting fathers, husbands, boyfriends, brothers, uncles, and nephews was equally as important. As a husband and father, I am very glad she opted for the latter decision.
