Imagine it, No stinky diapers lounging in the trash. No wiggling child desperate to escape, whether cleaned or not. No weekly expense at the check out for diapers, wipes, ointments, etc. But then, reality sets in. How does one get to this pot of gold at the end of the potty training rainbow? The answer is as different as each child.
If you are expecting an addition to your family, or just planning on having a baby in the future, you need to start thinking about how you are going to budget for your little one. Many first-time parents are shocked when they realize how much having a baby can cost. And I am not just talking about the doctor bills. It’s all the little things, such as diapers, clothes, formula, baby food, and toys, that add up to cost big bucks!
New parents have heard the argument time and again from their own parents or grandparents. “You young people don’t know how good you have it with those disposable diapers for your babies! When you were a baby I had to use cloth diapers on you and they smelled terribly, I had tons of laundry to do, I stuck myself with pins, and I walked uphill in the snow both ways to get to the diaper service…” and so on. The fact is that, less than thirty years ago, disposable diapers were considered something of a luxury while today they are the norm and people using cloth diapers for their babies are considered to be strange. There are several reasons that modern parents may choose to utilize cloth diapers instead of disposables, however, and in some circles cloth diapers are making a bit of a comeback.
I thought I was the perfect mother. Changing diapers after every nap and before every feeding and often inbetween. Making sure to clean thoroughly with wonderfully scented baby wipes each time. The baby’s bottom was beautfiul. Notice I used the past tense. And this was baby number six! As foster parents we had cared for our share of baby bottoms. Then it hit. Diaper rash. It came so quickly. And I had no idea how to cope.

Whether your decision is ecological, economical, or based on something else entirely, you’ve decided on cloth diapers for baby.
