Ways to Save Money on Gas

Gas Station

Gas prices keep climbing and climbing. Even during the off season, it seems like the price of gas is continuing to rise. For many families living on a tight budget, this can be tremendously frustrating. Keeping gas in the car just to get back and forth to work can be a challenge, at times.

If you’re serious about saving money on gas, there are a few things you can do:

  1. Learn to accelerate slowly. One of the best ways to save money on gas, especially if you do a lot of city driving, is to learn to speed up gradually. Slowing your rate of acceleration lowers your car’s RPMs and it can save you as much as 10% in terms of gas mileage.
  2. Don’t top off your gas tank. While it’s much easier to write down $50 in your checkbook instead of $48.63, you’re actually losing money when you top off your tank. Most gas pumps don’t have the kind of pressure needed to deliver gas efficiently during a short burst. In addition, topping off increases the risk of spillage. Topping off the tank costs you money.
  3. Put the car in the garage. For many of us, the garage is a large storage shed filled with boxes of old, unwanted items that we’re afraid to get rid of. The smart thing to do is to get your car into the garage when you’re not driving it. It keeps your car out of the sun reducing the need for air conditioning, and it will keep your car from icing over so you don’t have to idle the vehicle while it defrosts.
  4. Tighten your gas cap. A missing gas cap or one that’s loose will cause you to lose gas. Gas in the take will evaporate without a tight gas cap. Not only will it save you money on gas, it will keep warning lights from popping up on your dashboard.

Transportation is something you can’t be without, yet often it’s hard for a family to afford gas. Try some of these tricks to save your family some money on their weekly gas bill.
