Like we mentioned last time, there are some things that you just don’t intuitively know about pregnancy, yet these aren’t things that are always mentioned by friends and family when they find out you’re pregnant. The more you know ahead of time about what to expect, the better prepared you’ll be for pregnancy and the better able to adjust to the many changes going on.

Here are some more of the top 10 pregnancy surprises you might encounter:

1.      Bra size. Now, chances are pretty good you’ve heard someone mention that your breasts are likely to increase in size during pregnancy. They start to swell during the first trimester due to hormonal changes. What you may not realize is that they can continue to grow during the course of your pregnancy, right up until the time you start to nurse. Chances are pretty good that you’re going  to need to change bra sizes not just once or twice, but several times over the course of pregnancy.

2.      Skin changes. Sure, you’ve heard about a pregnancy “glow,” but you always figured that was just an expression. As it turns out, your skin changes significantly during pregnancy. Your skin will begin to stretch in order to make room for your baby. You’ll have increased blood flow, which can promote more oil secretion from your skin. That glow is probably actually oils produced by your skin. Some women may have acne breakouts, darkening of the areolas, or even splotch skin coloration changes.

3.      Hair and nail growth. The hormones that your body produces while you’re pregnant may make you grow hair thicker, faster, and have it fall out less than normal. Some women will grow hair in unexpected or unwanted places during pregnancy. On the belly, on the face, and around the nipples are common locations. Some women’s hair may become more oily or dryer than normal. After pregnancy, you’re going to lose a significant amount of that extra hair, as well. Oh, and chances are pretty good that your nails are going to grow faster and be stronger, although some women will find their nails split more often in pregnancy.

Next time, we’ll take a look at even more changes you didn’t expect to happen during pregnancy.
