Which Parenting Style Do You Practice?

Everyone seems to have their own take on parenting. Folks are especially generous with advice about how you should raise your children, whether or not they even have kids of their own.

The fact of the matter is that, as parents, we’re all individuals. It’s important to understand our natural tendencies when it comes to parenting so that we can shore up our weaknesses and build on our strengths.

Here’s a look at some of the most common parenting style facing today’s parents:

  • Intuition parenting. This is perhaps the most common parenting method. You rely on your instincts and intuition. It’s your own type of parenting, and it’s usually based greatly on how you were brought up. It might better be called “mimic parenting,” as for most people it means mimicking the parenting techniques caregivers used on them as children.
  • Attachment parenting. This style of parenting aims to help the child and the parent to create a strong emotional bond. These parents respond quickly when a child has a need. They try to be sensitive to their children and always emotionally available. The idea here is that this attachment will help the child be more self-secure as well as empathetic.
  • Assertive parenting. This parenting style sees the parent as the authority figure and rule giver. Parents establish specific sets of rules and then expect children to follow those rules. That being said, these parents aren’t necessarily strict and angry. Some are very nurturing and responsive when a child doesn’t meet expectations. It’s about being assertive rather than punishing.
  • Permissive parenting. Permissive parents make few demands of their children and don’t often discipline the children. They don’t expect much in the way of maturity or self-control, but believe that the child will eventually figure out on her own how she should act.
So, what kind of parent are you? What category do you fall into, or have you developed your own style? Maybe you use components from different styles. Tell us more about your approach to parenting in the comments section.
