New Ways to Prevent Sore Nipples during Breastfeeding

One of the most common complaints that nursing women have is sore nipples during breastfeeding. The fact of the matter is, however, breastfeeding isn’t meant to hurt. It’s supposed to be a bonding experience between you and your baby, and an opportunity for you to lovingly provide nourishment to your baby. Unfortunately, many women find that it isn’t always easy, and that they do experience sore nipples during breastfeeding.

More often than not, sore nipples during breastfeeding are the result of you and your baby not being positioned correctly. If you want to breastfeed without your nipples getting sore, here are some ways to go about positioning your baby correctly:

  • Make sure you are comfortable. You want to be in a comfortable position. Your back should be supported. You should have support for your arms, as well, so you won’t have to do too much shifting around. You should try to support your feet with something, such as a footrest.
  • Turn your baby so she is facing you. You want her hips to be flexed. What you’re aiming for is to aim her so that she won’t have to turn her head at all in order to latch on. Her mouth should face directly toward your nipple.
  • Consider having someone hand you your baby once you’re ready to breastfeed. This will help you position her so that she’s facing directly toward you.
  • Don’t let your breast press on your baby’s chin. Rather, the chin should press into your breast. You can do this by making sure your breast is supported.
  • When it’s time for your baby to latch on, try to get him to open his mouth as wide as possible. You can do this by using your nipple to gently tickly his lips.
  • As you lift your baby, pull him close and support the back, rather than the head.
  • If you’re not comfortable, chances are pretty good you’re going to wind up with sore nipples. Don’t be afraid to change your baby’s position during breastfeeding.

For most women, it’s just a matter of getting yourself and your baby comfortable and making sure that the latch is good if you want to avoid sore nipples during breastfeeding.
