Eating Healthy on a Tight Budget

In an ideal world, we’d all be able to eat organic, non-GMO foods at every meal. Unfortunately, some of the most healthy foods are also the most expensive. After all, it’s much cheaper, easier, and more convenient to grab a cheeseburger from your favorite fast food joint than it is to order a baked fish entrée at a nice restaurant.

Fortunately, there are some ways that families can save money and still eat healthy at the same time:

  • Eat at home. One of the best ways to insure that your family is eating healthy is to choose what they eat. Cooking meals at home will not only save you the premium that comes with dining out, it will also usually save you in calories. You can also target specific nutritional needs a whole lot better, too. It takes time to do, but you pay for the convenience of dining out both in dollars and in health.
  •

  • Plan your meals. Having a meal plan in place can help you in a couple of ways. First, it lets you choose what your family eats, as mentioned above. But, it will also save you money in groceries. When you plan your meals, you’ll create a shopping list with specific items that you need for various recipes and meals. That means less food goes bad, and you’re not buying food only to let it go to waste.
  •

  • Shop in season for produce. Produce that’s in season is not only going to be less expensive than when it’s out of season, it usually tastes better, too. You can even consider buying from local growers, which can sometimes save money and provide you with better food. During the fall and winter, you’re going to look for sweet potatoes, pears, apples, citrus fruits, and dark leafy green vegetables. During the summer, you’re looking for melons, berries, and green beans. You can buy frozen fruits and veggies all year long when they go on sale, just avoid the ones with added salt and sugar.
  •

  • Eat less meat. Meat is more expensive than other foods, and you can get plenty of protein other ways. We’re not telling you to go vegan, but consider cutting back on meat when and where you can. It will also have positive health effects.

So, what about you? What tricks do you use to eat healthy on a budget?
