As you’re probably well aware by now, celebrities like to make their opinions known about everything from politics to pregnancy. You also are aware that most things celebrities say should be taken with a grain of salt. Like anyone else, they can make tremendous errors in judgment, or they can be a useful resource for promoting an idea.





Lately, Jessica Alba has been promoting the benefits of hypnobirthing. Now, she’s not selling a book or on the lecture circuit, so this one is probably worth taking a look at. In a recent interview with US Weekly, she talked about how hypnobirthing can help you to relax, and ease fears prior to delivery.

So, what is hypnobirthing? Here are some basic concepts and facts related to hypnobirthing that will get you started in the right direction as you explore whether or not the technique might be right for you:

  • Hypnobirthing relies on hypnosis in order to get rid of pain, fear, and anxiety during the birthing experience.
  • With hypnobirthing, the mom relies on the mind to relieve discomfort and pressure, rather than on anesthetics or other medications.
  • The goal of this kind of hypnosis is to bring the mother into a deep state of relaxation, both mentally and physically.

Some women have concerns about using hypnosis, for a variety of reasons. Some are skeptical, and others worry about its effectiveness, or about what kind of state of susceptibility it might put them in. Here are some basic ideas about hypnosis that you should consider, as well:

  • Most folks can be hypnotized successfully.
  • Hypnosis isn’t a state of sleep or unconsciousness, and you can come out of hypnosis any time you want to.
  • Hypnosis can’t make you do anything that’s against your will.
  • There isn’t a religious component to hypnosis. Some groups do oppose hypnosis on religious grounds, but in many cases this is a matter of not really understanding how it works.

There are a number of hypnobirthing methods and classes you can take. Some of the most well-known methods are those developed by folks such as Vincent Priya, Michelle Leclaire O’Neill, and Marie Mongan.
