Whether you’ve simply reached that stage in life where your body is changing on its own, or whether you’ve had medical problems that have put you into an early menopause, the fact is that you might be facing some truly bothersome symptoms. Menopause is natural, but that doesn’t make it easy. (After all, childbirth is natural, too, but most moms would tell you that labor is far from an easy thing).

Symptoms of menopause can vary greatly from one woman to the next. Some of the most common symptoms include:

  • Disrupted sleep patterns.
  • Hot Flashes.
  • Irregular periods.
  • Mood changes.

Fortunately, there are some things you can do to try to make that transition easier, and manage some of the side effects of menopause. Let’s start with the basics today; while there may be other things that work for some women, these 5 tips will help just about everyone:

  1. Reduce your stress. There are all sorts of stress reduction techniques you can use. Meditation and yoga come to mind, and some of the tips below will also naturally reduce your stress. Reducing your stress level will help you to better cope with your symptoms.
  2. Eat a balanced diet. A balanced diet can help to give you energy when you need it and boost your overall health. It will also help your mood swings. Limit the amount of alcohol and caffeine you take in, as well.
  3. Don’t smoke. If you smoke, quit. Chances are pretty good you’ve tried to quit before; try again. Keep trying until it sticks. Talk to your doctor about medicines that might help, or call a quit-smoking hotline to get a quit kit.
  4. Watch your weight. Losing weight (if you’re overweight) can help to reduce your hot flashes according to researchers. It will also help boost your mood, and can help you sleep better at night.
  5. Get some exercise. Moderate exercise of just 30 minutes a day will help you sleep better, help stabilize your mood, and even strengthen your bones.

If you’re entering menopause, start with these 5 basic steps to get a handle on your symptoms.
