On April 28th, I went to a barbecue with my boyfriend. I wasn't really feeling bad until the afternoon, when my stomach started tightening up and then relaxing. The very next day was my due date, and being only 16 years old, I was really scared. I had a pretty typical pregnancy, but wasn't expecting to deliver exactly on my due date! At about 9:30PM, after I had taken a bath and got dressed, we went to the hospital. I wasn't in any pain, so thats why we didn't rush. When I got to the hospital, they put me in a triage room for about 25 minutes and hooked me up to a fetal monitor. After that, a doctor came in and examined me and I was still only 1 centimeter. It didn't help that the monitor wasn't picking up any contractions, but I was definantly feeling them. (No pain though) So...they sent me home. I was kind of mad, but I got over it. About 10 minutes after I got home,I went to the bathroom and noticed a little blood on the toilet paper. I got out of the bathroom and asked my mom if I should call the hospital, she said yes. So I called and they told me to come in again. When I got to the hospital again it was about 12:00AM. They put me back in triage and hooked me up to the monitor. This time it was picking up my contractions, which were still very painless. After about an hour of that, the doctor came in again and checked me. I was 2 centimeters. I was overjoyed, but fear soon kicked in and I was crying like a baby. My boyfriend and the nurse reassured me and they put me in a labor and delivery room. After I was there for a while, they came in to do my epidural. At this time, I was 4 centimeters. The epidural didn't hurt one bit, but I don't think I really needed it because I still wasn't in any kind of remote pain. Then they broke my water. Just to ensure that my labor moved along speedily, they put an iv of pitocin in. A little while later some family arrived and I got checked again. 6 centimeters! I was almost there and feeling overwhelmed with excitement and fear. At around 12:45, I got checked yet again and found out I was 8 centimeters. I was staring at the contractions on the monitor going completely off the screen and I was amazed that I still didn't feel any pain. Then, at 2:06, I started to feel this sudden urge to push. I didn't, but luckily the doctor came in to check me and told me it was finally time to push! Everyone got out except for my mom and my boyfriend's mom. (My mom filmed the event)It took me about 7 minutes to get my baby girl into the world. It didn't hurt one bit and it was the most wonderful and beautiful experience in my life. I think being ready and reading everything I could get my hands on about labor and deliver made the experience so wonderful. Being a mom is hard, but knowing I gave life to my little baby girl helps me to overcome any obstacle. I thank God everyday for my beautiful, healthy little girl.
