Hi ! This is my birth story from NC, USA. I am a single mother to begin with. My firstborn is 10 years old. Then, on Memorial Day - May 25,1998, I learned that I was pregnant !! This was definitely a shock !

This baby's due date was January 22, 1999. My pregnancy went better than the first time. I gained 31 pounds, didn't have the toxemia problems as before. But I craved foods like crazy this time !!! I argued with my OB the entire pregnancy about being put on medical leave from work and about how much time I would have to be absent from work after the birth - in the end, it was a compromise on one, a draw on the other. My argument was that I needed to work up until the birth and get back within 4 weeks so that I wouldn't have to go for very long without a paycheck. My OB was, of course, just concerned with my health.

I had an ultrasound at 17 weeks and was unable to determine the sex of the child - but at 22 weeks we discovered that the baby was a boy !! My doctor had to put me on leave at 36 weeks because my blood pressure was escalating and I was swelling . Also, at that point, my emotions weren't in a suitable state. I had had no support, either emotionally or financially, from the baby's father during the entire pregnancy , and this was a drag at the end of the term.

Well, I didn't go on leave when Dr. ordered, I stayed another week. I had dilated 1cm a week prior to this and felt sure that I would progress by the next visit. No such luck - still 1cm at 37 weeks and only 50% effaced.

On January 13, I had been sick all day long - diarrhea, nauseous, so I stayed in bed until around 4pm. My other son, Alex, had just finished his homework, and I decided to get up and fix dinner. At 5 minutes till 4, I started having contractions 5 minutes apart - but they weren't actually painful. At 4:20, I got out of bed and thought that I had wet myself (diarrhea), so I went into the bathroom, but nothing indicated that I had used the bathroom. I thought that my water had broken. I called the doctor's office, but he wasn't in that day, and there was nobody at his office. So I called my friend Barbara - she told me that it was my water. I stood up, and this big, warm gush of fluid occurred. I knew it was serious then !

I told Barbara that I was going to the hospital, to meet me there. She wouldn't let me drive myself, so I had to wait on her to get there. We arrived at the hospital at 5:00. I got checked in, the RN examined me - yes, that was my water breaking, but I was still only 1cm dilated. They hooked me up to the monitors and called my doctor. They told me that he would be there at 7pm.

By this time, the contractions were hurting like the worst menstrual cramps I could have, but they wouldn't give me anything for pain because my doctor wanted to check me first.

At 7pm, no doctor. He didn't get there until after 9pm, at which point I was dilated 3cm, contractions still 5 mins. apart. He did the epidural right away - 3 times ! The first two times he tried, it didn't work. But the third time was the charm ! At 11pm, he started a pitocin drip. at 12am, I was dilated 5-6 cm. At 2am, I was dilated 10cm and I started pushing.

At some point, I was administered oxygen - my nose kept getting stuffed up with every push and by the last push in my set of three, I couldn't breathe.

At 6 am on January 14th, my baby Jacob was born ! He weighed 7lbs 4 1/2 oz. And after the doctor suctioned, he immediately began crying - and didn't stop for 15 minutes ! He is beautiful - and I am so-o-o glad I could have him naturally after having a Cesarean the first time.

This has been a new experince for me - because after 10 years, so many things change, but it's still just as wonderful as the first time !
