Birth Story
By Patty Warren

I was due with my first child on December 8, 1995. I Had a doctor's appointment the following week because I still had not had the baby. Well, I woke up Tuesday morning December 13, since about 4 am I was having pains in my lower abdomen but really never thought nothing of it, went to the doctors with my husband and she says that I am in early stages of labour and am dialated 2 centimeters. So we did some last minute Christmas shopping and went home.

That night I kept track of the contractions until they were 5 minutes apart then we headed to town because we live 15 minutes from town. They hooked the heart monitor up the doctor checked me I was 4 centimeters dialated and she asked me if I wanted her to break my water or just wait until it happened, I said if it speeds it up lets break it. This was around 9:30 or 10:00 pm., then I was glad I chose to have that done because it really speeded the labour up, I was having such strong contractions one on top of the other boy did that hurt!

I was glad my husband was there because I really wanted drugs and he kept telling me how great I was doing and just hang on a little longer. In Peace River, they don't do epiderals it is just demorol or laughing gas. I finally said I want something for pain so they checked me and I was 6 cm and they said they can't give anything for pain past that except laughing gas so I said sure!! Well that didn't do anything for me so I stopped using it. I felt my labour was so intense I tuned everything out and had my eyes closed the whole time. Finally, I felt this incredible urge to push so they called my doctor she got there just in time, they wheeled me into delivery I tried to push lying on my side for a while but no luck and I was getting tired. So, I went on my back and in no time the baby came! The most painfull part is definitly the head coming out. She put him on my chest. I opened my eyes and my husband was crying and so was I. We were so happy we had our son. After the delivery I didn't feel any pain I was too excited. I had some bleeding the doctor had to stop and a little tear that needed stiches but it was so worth it and I really can't wait to have another child which we are working on. I gave birth to my son at 1:25 am, December 14, 1995. We also took child birth classes and I did nothing but read books on pregnancy and birth. I think it also helped we both had a positive attitude and outlook on what we wanted for the birth.
