Patrick's Birth Story
By Hillary

Well with Patrick, I was induced. He was due August 10th 1996. He was born July 25th. I was induced for several reasons but mostly I was huge and very uncomfortable and I was just plain sick and tired of being pregnant. I was to arrive at the hospital by 7:15 am so that is where I will start.

7:00am July 25th 1996
I didn't sleep that night anyway so being up that early was easy for me. Getting Steve up was another thing entirely after I finally got him up and going and loaded the car with everything I thought we would need, I hugged my mother good-bye and set off for the hospital. We arrived and parked and went up to the second floor and checked in they had to get in a gown (yuck) and to get in to bed (double yuck). They hooked me up to the monitors, took my blood pressure and other things and then asked a ton of questions.

8:00am
The doc arrives and puts the cervical gel and then said I would have to lay there for an hour then I would walk and walk and walk. I laid there like a giant fish or more like a whale ugh.

9:00am
I get to walk and walk and walk. I am starting to feel really crampy and tired from walking my feet hurt too so I sneak a rock in the rocking chair in my room. I walk about 45 min out of every hour and for 15 min they put me on the monitor to see how baby is doing and if I am having contractions.

11:00am
My best friend from grade school come to visit (she is the same one that was in premature labor as me when I had Anthony 4.5 yr. ago this is beginning to be weird how she seems to pop up like that isn't it ) She has the same ob-gyn as I do and was just across the street and he told her I was here so she came by to see me. I am glad. I tired of walking and she is a reason to sit I am really crampy by now and uncomfortable but managing well .

Noon
They say the doc will be by to check on me. Steve and I are making bets about how far I have dilated I say 4 he guesses 6. The doc come in and checks. I am 5. We were both wrong. He decides to break my water now. I get a bit nervous. No turning back now. It hurt I have to say it really hurt. They put an internal monitor on so they can be sure baby is ok so now I don't have to worry about walking anywhere.

1:00pm
I am having hard and painful contractions mostly back labor and almost unbearable. I am wanting my epidural NOW!!!!!! I ask for it , I beg for it , I lay on the ground and cry for it. No really but I did really really want it. They say he is on his way. Well he is not fast enough. They start getting everything set up and I am just laying here dying. I swear I am dying. I am convinced I will break in two pieces. I know that I will not live to see tomorrow and I am at the point that a very large heavy hammer smacking me in the side of the head looked like a good idea at this point.

1:51pm
He is here. They began to start the epidural. I having contractions and it is very very hard to lay still but I try and the nurse lays over me to keep me still. I don't even feel the stick at all. All I feel is a tinglely numbness that spreads slowly down my leg almost immediate relief in fact it works so well I can't even open my eyes for a min I just lay there and relax and enjoy ahhhhhhhhh relief.

4:30pm
We are almost asleep. Steve is relaxing in the rocking chair and I am my bed just waiting. No pain nothing. I am happy the doctor comes in to check me. So me and Steve place our bets. He says 8 I say 6 and again we are both wrong. I am 10 and ready to have this baby! So they began to tear down the bed and move stuff around. I am very very excited the doctor has me push a few time just to see if I need to let the epidural wear off or not. I push twice baby 's head is right there no need to let anything where off. He began to yell at the nurses that he needed this and that. They are ran around trying to get everything ready finally he says ok push and I push. The nurse counts to ten I exhale loudly I push again and I hear the beeping of the monitor go silent and the doctor says we have to get the baby out and turns to me and says you need to push and push hard. Ok so I began pushing and pushing as hard as I can though it doesn't feel like I am making any progress but apparently I was three pushes later I feel his head emerge I was so tired I couldn't even open my eyes all I could do was breathe.

4:51pm
He came out in a big gush and they were telling me it was a boy. I knew that and that the cord had been wrapped really tight around his neck. I didn't know that but he was ok. I didn't hear anything at first so I asked Steve if he was really ok and Steve just said he didn't know. The doctor said they were just suctioning out fluid that is why he wasn't crying he also said I didn't even tear that was a relief.

5:00pm
I am so excited! Nothing like it. He is all purple and badly bruised from coming out so fast and the cord being so tight but he is perfect to me. I am so happy he is out too. They said the bruising wouldn't last long not to worry and they were right. He would be not only perfect but absolutely beautiful. Patrick Kennedy weighed 8lbs 4ozs and was 20 inches long .

I have to say Patrick just turned 2 yr. old he is the light of my life he is charming, adorable, sweet and I call him my little angel with horns and a tail. He is so cute I can barely stand him and he knows this. He has the bluest eyes I have ever seen and the sweetest smile and this tiny sweet little voice. He is such a miracle in my life.
