Mason Scott's Birth Story
By Toni

To begin the wonderful story of my son's birth I would like to share some information about his parents. I was 20 and his father was 24. We were newlyweds (September 13). It was our first child and were very excited at becoming parents. We both worked two jobs and went to school. We were busy folks.

Now the pregnancy was uneventful til I was 30 weeks. I had the usual morning (all day) sickness for three months, had a little problem gaining weight, other than that everything was great. Keep in mind iI'm 4ft 11in and weighed 100lb pre-pregnant. After a busy weekend at work (retail) I had a few pains in my side nothing major I thought. I went home and rested and felt fine. The next morning I was getting ready for Church and notice I was bleeding. I told my husband to call my doctor. He said to come in immedately.

I wasn't feeling any pain or contrations. So they hooked me up to the monitors and said I was in pre-term labor and that they were going to have to stop it. They tried pumping me full of fluids. In the process my son's heartrate shot up to 190 and stayed there for a minute. Before I knew I was being transfered to another hospital in case they had to do an emergency c-section. My hospital didn't have the preemie care my son would've needed. At the time, I didn't know that my son could have died. Fortunately once we arrived at the other hospital everything returned to normal. I was still having contractions, which I was not feeling. I was dialated to a 2. They said if I went past a 3 they were going to have to deliver my son.

First they tried Morphine to stop the contrations which worked till it wore off. They tried another drug (don't know the name) that didn't work. So as a last resort the put me on Magnesium Sulfate. They said it would give me flu like symptoms. What they should've said is that it was like having a MAJOR hangover without the alcohol. I slurred my speech, had double vision, was very lethargic, amongst other things.

It didn't help that they were rude and hateful to me either. I only had one nurse that was nice to me the whole time. Her name was Hiedi she was a godsend. Thankfully we convinced my son to stay in a little longer. This all happened one month to the day after we got married (Oct. 13). So I was put on bed rest for the remainder of my pregnancy. So I went from busy bee to doing absolutly nothing. I wasn't due til sometime around Christmas. So I thought I had at least two months before I would be back at the hospital. My doctor said he would stop my labor as many times as he had to till I was 36 weeks. Unless either one of us couldn't take it.

All went well till I was 36 weeks. It was the weekend before Thanksgiving.

Friday:
My husband, mother-in-law, and I went out to eat buffet which I loved. Then we went to the mall to look around. The whole time we were there my belly was rock hard and itching. I finally found a place that let you sample lotion and I rubbed away. I didn't care who was watching me it felt good. We went home and I felt fine. Thought nothing of it.

Saturday:
Went with my sister to Sam's club (huge warehouse type place) to pick up the remaining things we needed for Thanksgiving. Half way through the store I start feeling little pains shooting straight down my back and insides. Well I sit in car and wait for my sister to come out and I feel fine. Mind you I'm still on bedrest. Later that evening we went out to eat and I get those pains again. Well I didn't think any thing of them because I've had cramps worse than that. My sister said "Don't go into labor yet we haven't even ordered yet and I'm hungry." I told her not to worry that I wasn't in labor (still had a month left) I was probably just having Braxton hicks. Still didn't think I was in labor. Hadn't called my husband to tell him what was going on. Went home that evening and felt fine once again.

Sunday:
My husband and I spent the day relaxing and doing laundry. I had a few pains nothing major or regular. Went to bed and felt great. Still didn't think I was in labor.

Monday:
My mother-in-law and I go to my regularly scheduled appointment. I was 36 weeks and one day. I had a hard time getting out of the car. I could feel my son move his head. I also could see how far down he was. I had only two contractions on the 30-45 minute drive, but I had an uncomfortable feeling down there.

I figured I better tell the doctor about the last couple of days and what was going on. I stepped on the scale and hadn't gained anything. She asked if I had been having contrations, I said a few here and there. My nurse turned around and left the room quickly (she was usually talkative). She returned told me to use the restroom (pee in the cup). I went into the room and the doctor was waiting for me. He said he wanted to do an exam to check if everything was ok. My mom-in-law opted to sit this out. I got my gown on and waited for the doctor. He came back and asked me how long had I been having those contractions. I told him three days. He questioned why and all I said was that I didn't think I needed to.

As he checked me his mouth hit the floor. He asked who I was with and I told him. He said "well you two are going to have to stay really close. You are 3- 4 cent. dialated and 80% effaced." I also had bloody show. I convinced him to let me go home and get my husband who was in school. Well all the way home I had contractions every three to five minutes. They still didn't hurt that bad. I get home and page my husband at school with "the code". I called my sister who was also going to be there. She said she would meet me there at five pm. I packed my bag and warmed up lunch. My husband flew in the door about five minutes after I paged him School is five - ten minutes away. He was ready to fly to the hospital. I told him to calm down that we were going to have lunch first. I learned that lesson from preterm labor when I didn't get to eat for three days. We eat lunch and I still was having contractions every three minutes. Called the doctor he said go ahead and come to be checked out.

I was put on montiors for an hour and a half. I was told that if I progressed to a 5 or more I would be admitted. I really didn't want to go home I cause I knew we would be back the same day anyway. Yeah I was checked and progressed to a 5 (3:30pm) I was admitted and taken to my room. Oddly enough it was the same room (2192) I was in preterm labor with before I was transferred to the other hospital.

Then to my surprise who walks in the door Hiedi. She transferred to my hospital the week early. I was so glad that she was going to be my nurse she made me feel comfortable. I went and relaxed in the jacuzzi and then back to my room. The contractions did pick up so my husband and I continued roaming the halls. We did that till it got boring. Then I went back to my room for dinner and to be checked. To my disappointment I was only a 6 (7:00pm).

My doctor said if I didn't progress that he would give me something to help me sleep and he would break my water at 6:30 am the next morning. Since I was still a 6 at 9:00pm. I sent everyone home and told them to come back in the morning. I took the sleeping pill which was great.

Tuesday:
My husband and I slept great, til about 1:00 am when my contractions started coming every minute. Hiedi, my godsend, came and checked on me just as I was reaching for the button. I was still a 6 when the doctor on call came in. By the time that was all over I was back to have contractions every 3 to 5 minutes apart and again not that strong. So I tried to rest but I was getting excited knowing I would be holding my son soon.

So I slept till 5:45am. I then sat anxiously awaiting the doctor, who arrived at 6:45am. I woke up my husband and he got up and moving. He went to the restroom and just as he came out they broke my water. The famous comment was "there's a lake in her bed!". Well all was fine till about half an hour later when the contraction were coming every minute and very intense. I dealt with that for about two hours at that time I was between a 6-7 (9:00am). I couldn't handle it anymore so I gave in and got an epidural. That was a great feeling.

By 10:30 am I was ready to push in spite of a little bit of a cervical lip plus my son being posterior. I got a small urge to push and my nurses instructed me on how to do so. We didn't have time to get any classes in. It was a busy time to have a baby. After two pushes the nurses said "well I hope the doctor gets here before the baby does." The doctor arrives and suits up. With a few more pushes and some massaging I can see my son's head coming. My sister encouraged me to feel his head. The next few pushes he was out.

My son was born at 11:31am. My husband cut the cord. My son was beautiful. He came out kicking and screaming. Believe it or not I didn't tear. My doctor said I was the easiest money he's made in a long time. Pushing time was under an hour. I think for my first child I did really well. I nursed from day one and still am.

My son is now 10 months old and you wouldn't be able to tell that he was a month early and so little. He's now 23lbs and 30in. He is the world to my husband and I.

A little note to petite women, even though we may be small on the outside, it's what's inside that counts. People said I would have to have a c-section. I sure did prove them wrong I didn't even have stitches. Like they always say "Good things come in small packages."

Thank you for taking the time to read my story. Sorry for the length, there is just too many details that make it what it is.

PS: This Thanksgiving we had alot more to be thankful for.

Sincerely,
Toni, Scott, Mason
