Birth Stories
By Margena

The first time I was pregnant, I was working at Target as a cashier. I became pregnant, but had a miscarriage at 6 weeks.

The second time was much better, but we didn't want to tell too many people until we got past the three month point. We just told our family and close friends, and I told some people at work.

Anyway, the pregnancy went smoothly. I craved Mexican food, but had morning sickness as well. It started out in the morning for the first month. By the second it had moved to the afternoon, and by the third month it was at night!

Everything went well. I gained forty lbs. but I was a little under weight at the start (5'4", 110 lbs). My due date was Feb. 28th. Around that time, we had a small earthquake (cant' remember the magnitude!), and I was home alone, but just very calmly got up and stood in the doorway. My mother in law called to make sure I was okay. "I'm not in labor," I told her. My due date came and went and I had two stress tests. On the second one, they decided to induce my labor because of fetal distress. I called my husband at work, and he came home. At 11AM they started to induce, and at 2PM I finally started to feel something. They would come in to check me every once in awhile. At around 10:30 PM, I had a 7 minute long contraction! It would start to go away, but then it would just go up again! So after it finally stopped, my husband went to get someone to check me. They didn't want to since they had just checked me, but hubby insisted, and I was at 7 cm.! Things got really busy in my room. I got my epidural (I loved that!), and I could feel when to push but not the pain.

At 12:58 AM, Aerin Ila was born. She weighed 7 lbs. 15 oz, and was 19 1/2" long. She's 7 1/2 years old now. And I had planned on keeping some of the weight I had gained, but I lost it all!

The third time was pretty much uneventful, too, except when my labor started. I was still nine days before my due date, so nothing was ready around the house, but that didn't matter at the time. As my husband would leave for work each morning, he would ask, "Can I go to work today?" and I always answered, "Yes." That morning was no different. But five minutes after he left I went to use the bathroom and my water broke! Uh-oh! It takes my husband an hour to get to work, and I knew that, but I had no other way to get in touch with him except to call his work. So I did and left a message for him to call as soon as he got there. He did and I told him what happened. He said he'd be on his way home right then. He told me as he left, they were all chanting "Boy! Boy!", since we already had a girl.

Well, it also takes him an hour to get home, too. I called my mother in law to put her on the alert in case Reid didn't make it home in time. She's not at work. I try her home; not there, either. I called my sister to let her know. My water broke at 7:30 AM, I called my sister and spoke to my brother in law and told him what was going on. My pains started at 8 AM. I kept trying to call my mother in law and in between I called my friend to let her know and to keep my mind off the contractions. I had a really strong one at almost nine, and she said "Call 911!" But I finally got ahold of my mother in law and she came to pick me up. Another problem: my hospital (FHP) was in Fountain Valley, CA, and I live in Lakewood, about a half an hour freeway drive away. All the while in the car, I was doing my "heavy breathing", and thinking "Reid's not going to make it."

We got to the hospital, and found our way to the Labor area. I wouldn't let my mother in law go move her car, parked in the ER parking. She was there for my whole labor, and my husband showed up in time to say "Push!" once and the head came out! Brent Lancin was born on Dec 16, at 10:19 AM. He weighed 9lbs. 3 oz, and was 20 1/2 " long. I gained 45lbs. with this one and lost it all again! I got to the hospital too late to get an epidural, so I felt every single thing, but it's not so bad when you think back on it. He's 5 1/2 years old now.

The next pregnancy was also normal except for the labor. I started getting contractions at 10 PM (a week early this time), so we got Grandma to come watch the kids, who were already in bed asleep. My husband finally got to drive me to the hospital this time, and we got there by 11 PM. We got everything taken care of, I got changed into my gown, and got put in a bed. The nurses checked me and I was at something like 6 or 7 cm. About half an hour later I told my husband to get someone to check me and before he could get to the intercom, I said "I need to push!" Two minutes later there were people in my room getting things ready, and my water broke during a contraction. I had to blow for 15 minutes because they weren't ready for the delivery! It was so nice when I finally got to push, I only pushed about five or six times before the head slithered out! Carter Alexander was born at 12:40 AM, he weighed 9lbs. 4 oz. and was 21 1/2" long. I didn't get an epidural for this one, either. He's 13 months old now. The kids didn't even know their Daddy and Mommy were gone until the morning when Reid told them they had a brother. I don't know why all my kids have been so big, and come so fast.
