Lucy's Birth Story
By Lisa

I was always terified of being examined by my gyn. before I got pregnant I had never undergone an internal or smear, so my doctor was expecting a rough birth with me.

I had a fertility problem and got pregnant using clomid assistance, when I found out to my astonishment that I was pregnant only 2 cycles of trying, I was determined not to think of the birth.

My pregnancy was the usual morninig sicknes from 1st week of conception through to 5 months, braxton-hicks contarction from 32 weeks and as I came closer to my due date 20th October 1993, I blanked my fears from my mind. My husband and I did not want to know beforehand if it was a boy or a girl... and all my ultrasounds had been great.

So on the evening of the 17Th Oct. my mother very kindly decided to make me walk around the neighbourhood 6 times (around 3km). I remember it was hot and sticky (we live in Cyprus). I went to bed absolutely exhausted.

I awoke the next morning feeling fine but heavy. My husband was getting ready for work (out of town that day), I asked him to stay close to home instead, he said that I was fine and to call him at the office at around 10am if I was still okay. I got our of bed, and felt a tiny trickle of liquid running down my leg..I dismissed it as I hadn't had a chance to go to the bathroom yet. I then showered and dressed and went to check in with my doctor that nothing was going on. As I was ready to say bye, I looked down at the floor and saw a puddle of yellow liquid at my feet. She tells me to pack my bags and get the clinic.

So I call my hubby, much to his surprise, and get my mother to drive me to the clinic. My husbands arrives there just as we do.

The Dr then comes to examine me, I was at first really frightened but I tried to relax and she proceeded to find that my waters hadn't actually broken, they were leaking from higher up but because the baby was already engaged they couldn't break them, so they connected me to an IV drip at 10am to bring on my contractions that did not exist yet. I thought that it was great I had no pain I felt rested and excited. By 12pm I had very faint contractions and had dilated 2cm. By 1pm I had dilated another 2cm with moderate painful contraction. At this point the nurse gave me pethedine, hoping that it would ease the pain, it made me cry , throw up and I went absolutely looney. It wore off thankfully after 1/2 hour. By 3pm, I was 8cm dilated and could no longer carry on a civilised conversation with anyone including my husband who at this time I had started screaming at for getting me pregnant in the first place. I was told to try and go to the bathroom, as soon as I sat on the toilet seat I felt the urge to push - I shouted for help and the nurse and dr rushed in and put me a wheelchair running to the birthing room. My husband was there with me all day and asked to be allowed in at the birth, my dr advised him that in the event that he faints he will not be given any attention (laughingly). So with a midwife on one, side my husband on the other, and the dr below, I start to push - of course my husband could not stand to miss anything so he leaves my side to take the dr side instead! On the first push the baby's head crowned, Harry my husband starts jumping for joy, on the second push the babys head popped out! Harry starts to panic now thinking that the baby is going get strangled while I am holding onto the very chubby midwife for support. On the 3rd Push, Harry screams that we have a baby girl, Loukia or Lucy to you is born with a scream. The umbilical cord was very short though and she was pulled back in nearly falling on the floor. Thankfully everything was okay though and as soon as the cord was cut I kissed her beautiful head and she was taken to be cleaned. She was born at 3.45pm, 5 hours after I arrived at the clinic with no contractions. My legs began to shake terribly while I was stitched, I was cut but also tore slightly. An hour later, Loukia was brought to me accompanied my a doting father. An hour later I was walking around as if nothing had happened. The dr was so happy that she told me that I was the easiest most co-operative birth that she had ever had.

It was the most wonderful experience that Harry and me have ever shared. Loukia is now going to be four and I am hoping that I will test positive with a pregnancy test I will be having on Monday.

Note: Loukia was born on the 18th October weighing 7lbs and 4oz, with a length of 23cm and scored 9. On the 18 Oct. it is also St lukes name day , my mother name is also Lucy, it is also my grandmothers birthday and was my great-grandmother name day and birthday. So we have 5 generations of either b'days or name days on the 18th Oct.
