Jessica Marie's Birth Story
By Robin

My story is pretty simple. My pregnancy was going very well with no complications. And the whole time I had been told that I could get an epidural when my labor started. My husband and I were concerned about whether or not I could get one, because I had corrective surgery on my spine when I was younger. But we got it checked out and my Dr said he didn't see why I couldn't get one.

Anyway we got to 40 weeks and I was very pregnant and ready to have this baby. So my hubby and I discussed induction with my Dr. To our surprise he said he could do it the next day!! Imagine how we felt! It was a very big reality check, but we were excited.

So the next day we arrived at the hospital at noon. They did all my admitting papers and got my bloodwork started. At 1:00 p.m. the nurse started my pitocin, to get my contractions going. At first I couldn't feel them, but around 3:00p.m. they started getting stronger, like menstrual cramps. They progressed pretty quickly, but at 8:00 I was only five cm, so my doctor came in and broke my water.

I was becoming impatiant, especially since I was almost 3 cm when I came to the hospital. Anyway after he broke my water the contractions became really, really, really strong. At 10:00 I was up to 8 cm and this guy comes in (the one who gives the epidurals) and says I can't have one!!!!!!! He says he's afraid it would cause an infection. And I'm thinking "thanks for waiting till I'm 8 cm dilated to tell me this."

So anyway I didn't get the epidural I was promised. They tried IV medication but that did nothing for me, it was like giving me water. And I kept wanting to push so bad, but I knew I couldn't. My husband kept telling me to breathe, like they taught us in Lamaze, but my contractions hurt so bad I could hardly move. And I am not kidding. They really hurt!

So anyway at 11:00 Dr. Dennis told me I could start pushing, and that helped a little, because you can "focus" your pain on the pushing and it lessens it a little. But, it turned out not to be that easy. First of all, our little girl's head was pretty big, and every time I would ease up on a push she would go back up. And secondly, she was facing upward and that made it even harder.

So the Doctor had to cut me, what we lovingly refer to as episiotomey. He told me he was gonna do it but I was in so much pain I didn't care. He did give me a local anesthetic so I didn't feel it. Anyway, after he did that, she slid right out! And what a wonderful moment it was. I'll be honest, I was so relieved it was over. I don't think I could have lasted much longer!

Anyway I don't think I did too bad for a first time mom-my labor was only 10 hours and I only pushed for 45 minutes. Jessica Marie was born on May 7, 1999, at 11:47 pm. She was 20.5 inches long and weighed 8lb.1oz. And we love her so much! She was worth all the pain. She's a beautiful little girl. Even though her birth wasn't an easy one, I don't regret it.

I'm proud of myself for doing it naturally. It makes me feel good! And before I'm through I'd like to pay tribute to my doctor, Dr. Martin Dennis. He is an excellent doctor and if we ever have another child I'm definitly going back to him. He was always very pleasant and easy to deal with. My husband and I both like him.

So everything turned out great and we got a little girl out of it. We're so proud of her! so good luck to all of you pregnant ladies out there, and if I can do it, you can too! God bless all of you and take care.
