Jennifer's Birth Story
By Debra Baker

Jennifer was born in the hospital birth room on Dec 21, 1980. This was one of the country's first birthing rooms. I was dissatisfied with Jessica's birth in the delivery room at the same hospital and was eager to have a more pleasent experience the second time.

I read 'Thank you Dr. Lamaze' and signed up for Lamaze classes outside the hospital. The teacher helped us prepare for labor and birth.

Jennifer was due on Dec. 17, and I was getting desperate to have her. I tried all the old wives' tales. I ate a head of cabbage! I cleaned the entire house and went over to my In-laws and did ten loads of their wash! That night, I did the last old wives' tale, Pat and I made love. About one hour later, I started to have nice contractions. I called the doctor and he said, go to the hospital!

I got there and they didn't shave me! No enima. (there IS a God) I was starting to feel as though the contractions were so strong that I couldn't stand much more of this. The nurse examined me and, guess what? I was 8cm. dialated and dialating quickly. The doctor arrived as the nurses pulled the bed apart in preparation for the birth. I was ready to push and my cervix was dialated to a full 10cm!

I gave several strong pushes and the doctor told me to stop pushing and start breathing. I breathed and allowed the baby's head to slowly crown. It felt like rubber bands being stung on me, but the sensation lasted for less than one minute. Slowly, her head was born, followed by her sholders and the rest of her body just slid out. The doctor placed her gently on my belly and I got to meet my precious little daughter!

She cried a little, looked up into my eyes. I put her to the breast and Jennifer nursed gratefully. I felt so good! I had my sweet little 8lb.8oz.daughter! Later that day, big sister, Jessica came for her visit and she bonded beautifully with Jennifer. I never thought childbirth could be so satisfying!
