Birth Stories - Hospital Birth Stories

My first child I had very young, and needless to say it was an unplanned pregnancy. When my son Tanner was three years old I met Mike. We started dating and after being together for two years, got married. Since Tanner was already five I didn't want to wait too long to get pregnant again so we got off birth control a couple months after we got married. After only a month, I took a pregnancy test and it came back positive. I was so excited! My DH was excited too but I think he was a little shocked at how quickly it all happened. I had taken the pregnancy test the day before Thanksgiving and we were planning on having both my family and my DH's family over for dinner on Thanksgiving so during the middle of dinner I told Tanner to come over to me. I whispered in his ear that mommy has a baby in her tummy. I told him to go sit back down and then I announced to everyone that Tanner had something to tell them. He was looking at me with this look of wonderment and blurted out, Mommy has a baby in her tummy! Everybody started talking and laughing at the same time, they were all so excited.

Just like my first pregnancy I was very lucky that I didn't have any morning sickness. The doctor gave me a due date of August 1st 2005. Everything was going really well with the pregnancy. I had gained almost 65 pounds with my first pregnancy and I didn't want a repeat so this time around I exercised a lot and ate really healthy. I only ended up gaining about 25 pounds (which was perfect since I was a little overweight going into the pregnancy). At my 20 week ultrasound we found out that the baby was a boy. I really wanted a girl but my DH and Tanner were both so excited that it was a boy. The first thing Tanner said was "can I get a bunk bed now?"

My first baby was 9 lbs 4 oz one week early and the doctor could tell that this baby was really big also so she started talking about inducing. We scheduled to induce on July 29th. When I called the hospital that morning though they said they were too busy with people that went into labor on thier own to do an induction that day. I was really disappointed since I was pretty miserable at that point. My doctor rescheduled to do it on the 31st. So for those couple days I tried all the old wives tales. I walked and walked and had sex, I wanted that baby out! Sure enough on the night of the 30th at about 9:00 I felt my first contraction. DH and I had just gone to bed and he was already asleep so I went to sleep after the contraction. About a half hour later I woke up to another one, I just kept sleeping in between contractions until they were about 7-8 minutes apart. By midnight they were five minutes apart so I called the hospital. The nurse said to come on in so I went and woke my husband up. It was just like in the movies, I shook him and said "honey, it's time" he flew out of bed and started getting dressed and put our things in the car. Luckily we had everything packed already so it only took a couple minutes. We only lived about 15 minutes from the hospital but during the car ride the contractions started coming every two to three minutes and were VERY painful.

Once we got all checked into the hospital the nurse checked me and I was already at about 4-5 centimeters. They asked if I wanted an epideral and I said YES! They brought me up to labor and delivery and got me set up in a room. The anethesiologist came in about a half hour after I got there and gave me the epideral... I immediatly felt so much better and was able to chat with my DH and my mother-in-law who had come down. She stayed for a couple hours and we all just hung out and waited. The only bad thing about the epideral was that it did slow down my progress. In the three hours before I got the epideral I was progressing really fast, as I said I was already at almost five centimeters after three hours, after the epideral it took almost seven hours to get through the next 5 centimeters, but since I was pain free I was able to sleep a little bit and relax. At seven am my doctor came in and checked me. She said I was at 10 cent. and that they were going to get ready for me to push. I pushed through just one contraction and my son was born at 7:19 am. He was perfect and I will never forget the moment they put him on my chest. I couldn't believe after waiting all that time that he was finally here for me to hold and love. The doctor was right about him being huge though... he was 10 lbs. 10 oz. I only tore a tiny bit though and required just two stitches.

Tanner was so excited to finally meet his baby brother and now they both are going to be big brothers as I am due with number three in just 12 days, I finally am getting my little girl.
