Birth Stories - Hospital Birth Stories

I was 20 years old when I gave birth to Colin. We had chosen to have a nurse midwife, because we were unimpressed with the local doctors and were not yet comfortable with the idea of a homebirth.

At 39 weeks pregnant, we went to visit a friend who had just had her baby. I jokingly said that I wished they would keep me. Little did I know! I went home to find a message on my answering machine from my midwife that said I had a biophysical profile an hour from then. Back we went to the hospital.

A biophysical profile measures the amount of amniotic fluid, watches for the baby to practice breathing, and counts both large and small movements. They assign 2 points to each category. A 6 or 8 is good. I got a 4 since Mr. Colin decided not to move! My midwife decided we would stay the night and induce me in the morning. She tucked me in by telling me he was about 9 lbs. (Just what every mom wants to hear the day before she gives birth)

Colin decided to keep me awake by kicking the fetal monitor all night. Ironic since we were inducing for lack of movement. At 8PM the started pitocin. At 2 pm my midwife broke my water. At that point I started to have contractions. By 5 pm I was asking for drugs. My midwife was very supportive of my previous decision to go natural and had my try various positions and the birthing ball to get me through.

At 7 pm I recieved a shot of Stadol. It made me fall asleep and wake up to a full strength contraction. It was awful, I had no time to prepare for the pain. It wore off within the hour.

My midwife continued to work with me, but I was not dilating past 7cm. She was beggining to worry about the possibility of a C-section, so she gave me an epidural at 11pm hoping I would relax and dilate. I went to sleep and woke up at midnight fully dialated and ready to push.

I pushed for 2 hours and with a small episiotomy, Colin was born at 1:57 am on Feb. 4, 2000. He weighed 9lbs. 3oz. and was 21 and 1/2 inches long. He was placed immediately on my chest and remained there for a full hour. We attempted to nurse, but he was dopey from the medications.

Colin is now a very active toddler and will be 18 months old tommorow!
