We found out we were pregnant in July 2000. We were on vacation in the mountains and I noticed I wasn't feeling all that well in the mornings but by mid day I was fine. We we got home, my period was late and sure enough, I was pregnant. We were due to have our baby March 17, 2001.
The pregnancy went very very well. I gained minimal weight, only 16 pounds in total. I thought for sure something was wrong because I always figured I would gain more. At 30 weeks we found out we were having a baby girl. DH was so happy as that is what he had predicted all along! I worked full time up to 37 weeks. My doctor took me off since my ankles were swelling.
At home, I went on a cleaning frenzy. Can someone say "nesting"? I was the perfect little wife. DH and I really enjoyed our time of having a totally orgnazied life....until March 14th. That day, I just felt off. Didn't want to do anything but sit and stare at the television...so I did. At 3 pm my first contraction hit. I had also noticed I had pink discharge that was increasing as the contractions came. I was so excited, I called DH at work and told him I thought this was finally it. I made supper and waited for him to come home. We ate and talked about how happy we were that the birth of our daughter was finally upon us.
I kept myself busy most of the evening and by 10:30 pm my contractions were 5 mintues apart so off to the hospital we went. They examined me and said I was only 2 cm and that my contractions were not strong enough to keep me in. They sent us home and I was really mad. I felt like a failure for some reason.
When we got home, I had a bath to ease the pain. At 12:30 am I came back to bed with contractions only 3 minutes apart and increasing in intensity. I layed in bed moaning and groaning into my pillow, trying to be quiet so DH could sleep. At 2:00 am my water broke. I heard a huge pop and then a big gush. DH felt the gush and jumped out of bed. I cleaned up, through a big towel between my legs and off to the hospital we went again.
This time I was 4 cm so of course they let me stay. I laboured until 4:30 when I decided I couldn't take it anymore. I was disappointed as I had wanted to go natural but I just couldn't get myself to relax and the thought of no pain was wonderful. I had a walking epidural which allowed me to still get up and walk around, yet I felt no pain at all. I highly recommend it!
The hours ticked by. At 9 am I was at 9 1/2 cm. I had just a lip left and they wanted to wait until it was gone. Plus they said to wait till she dropped more so I wouldn't have to push so much. They gave me pitocin to finally move that lip. At 11 am they said it was time to push. Doctors and nurses came from everywhere to get the show on the road. I just held DH's hand...I was so happy to be having his little girl.
I pushed and pushed but I just couldn't fit her head out so the doctor suggested and episiotomy. I was hesitant but agreed. I had already been pushing for an hour. After the cut, she was out in less then 5 minutes. She was so alert...looking around..taking in the new world around her. They placed her right on my chest and she latched on right away. It was precious.
Veronica Lynne was born March 15, 2001 and weighed 7 pounds 5 ouces and was 19 7/8 inches long. Her Daddy and I couldn't stop staring at the beautiful little being we had made. She is 2 1/2 months now and is nothing but smiles. We love her so much, we can't wait to give her a little brother or sister!
