Birth Stories - Hospital Birth Stories

I had a very eventful pregnancy from conception to birth. I spent a total of 8 weeks on bedrest, weeks 8-14 for threatened miscarriage and weeks 33- 36 for preterm labor. Never during any of these weeks did I realize what a miracle I was growing inside of me and what was a stake to be lost. I know know that we have been truly blessed and will cherish Payton everyday.

My labor began at 5:00 am on Tuesday June 8, 1999. I was 37.1 weeks. I woke up thinking I must have pulled something or been extra sore because I had been really sick the day before vomiting.

My husband, Adam, went to work and I couldn't sleep so I watched TV. After an hour or so I began to notice that the pain was not constant and would come and go every 5-6 minutes and seemed to linger in my lower back. I called Adam and told him I thought I was in labor and I would keep him posted. I had a doctor's appointment at 11:40 am so I thought I would just wait and see what happened then.

I went to my appointment and told my doc about my contractions and she asked me if I wanted to have my cervix checked. I said yes so she checked me and I was 90% effaced dialated 3cm and at a 0 station. She told me I would more than likely be having the baby today or tomorrow. The exam made me bleed alot more than I expected and a few minutes after I got home I lost my mucus plug. I continued to have contractions and at about 1:30 pm when my contractions started coming every 3-5 minutes apart I called Adam and told him it was time to come home.

I cleaned the house, packed the car and made sure the cats and fish were fed. When Adam got home we decided to go for a walk around the neighborhood. My contractions were anywhere from 2-6 min apart. At about 4PM we decided to start heading to the hospital.

We got about a block from the house and we saw an elderly couple who's car had broken down. We stopped and Adam pushed them to a gas station. We got to hospital and they checked me and found I was now 4cm. I was admitted and decided to start walking the hallways.

I was extremely suprised with the level of calm Adam & I had. I was doing very well with my contractions and kept telling Adam I couldn't believe that I was really in labor. It was NOTHING like I had expected.

The nurses kept telling me how well I was tolerating my contractions which at this point were every 2-3 min. After two hours of walking I was 5 1/2 - 6 cm and decided I was going to take a shower and then start the epidural process because although I was tolerating them now I knew there was a lot stonger contractions not far ahead.

I showered and then requested mt Epidural. At this time it was about 10:30 pm. The first try for the Epidural tapped into a blood vessel, the second attempt was unable to get through to the proper place and the third attempt went in but only numbed me from the left hip to the left knee.

The midwife came in and broke my water and the contractions got really intense from there. I was in alot of pain and asked for them to please make my epidural work. While they fiddled around unsuccessfully trying to make the medication distribute, I began to feel pressure. This was at 12:29 am.

They were going to try a new epidural AGAIN, but I asked to wait until I was checked. The midwife checked me, I was 8cm!!!! The midwife went to leave the room while I said forget it to the fourth Epidural.

30 seconds later I felt a huge urge to push that I couldn't stop. I was so scared and unprepared for this that I screamed what's happening I have to push!!!!! They said NO! don't push!!! The midwife came and checked me and screamed PUSH!!! You're 10 cm!!

I was so scared and my body just took over anticpating the next contraction before it even happened. Adam was on one side of me holding my leg and my sister was on the other. I felt like an animal, completely uncivilized. I did not swear, but I did my share of noice making. My favorite words were OH MY GOD HELP ME!!!!!!! and I CAN'T DO IT!!!!!

I really had to focus to regain control in between contractions. I was a very effective pusher and little Payton was born at 12:44 am after 14 minutes of pushing.

She weighed 5 lbs 14 oz and was 18 3/4 inches long. Her head was 13 inches and her chest was 12 inches. Her APGARS were 8 & 9, she lost a point for color because she was a bit purple when she came out. I tore a little, 2nd degree and got the Big Daddy of all hemorroids, but other than that I came out of it fairly well.

It has been 3 days now and Payton has yet to cry more than an isolated whimper. She is everything and more than I ever expected. I am so in awe of her. I find myself staring at her for hours. She is the best thing I have ever done.

Her daddy is so wonderful and has taken to fatherhood like an pro. I am so fortunate to have such a wonderful man for a husband and such a beautiful daughter. This is definetly what life is all about.

Thank you for letting me share my proudest moment I hope you enjoyed the story of Payton Lee's entrance into the world.
