With my first child I had pre-eclampsia that was starting to advance so once I hit the 38 week mark and the doctor considered me term I was induced. The most confusing part was that I was sure I was going to have a girl and then found out during the ultrasound they did to make sure the baby was ok that she was a he. Luckily I hadn't relied completely on my instincts and the nursery was done in pink and blue :) and we had a name chosen as well so there was no panic on those fronts. So off to the hospital we went. It was Tuesday evening and I had my last meal and they started the inducing process (write me back if I'm being to general about the procedure... don't know how much detail you want :) My husband and I agreed that the next few hours wouldn't be a problem (I slept) so that it would be best if he went home and got a good nights rest as well. The next morning, Wednesday, they started the pitocin drip. We waited, and waited, and waited. Every now and then there'd be a little peak on the monitor graph showing that I'd had a contraction, but I went nowhere. So around 3 that afternoon they took me off the drip. By 4 I was definitely in labor although it still didn't hurt very much. My husband was still allowed to talk to me and hold my hand etc. at this point. The hardest part was I wanted to watch television, but they kept having comercials for Burger King. Then my water broke about 8pm and then the real fun began. I was only about 2 cm so pain reliever was out of the question. But BOY did I want it. To heck with natural! THIS HURT! My husband was a lot of help during this point. I'd wake him up during contractions and he'd help me keep my pace on breathing (something we giggled about in childbirth class, but it sure came in handy). We got very little sleep that night and come the next morning at 9am I was still only 3 cm. By this time I was begging the nurse to get the anesthesiologist so she sent for him about the same time she started the drip. She left it on for just a second before she had to turn it off. But, I've since found out, once my body hits the 3 cm mark it takes very little time to get to fully dialated (with or without pit). An hour later the anesthesiologist arrives and asks his questions and we sign the concent. Then they check me and low and behold I was 8 cm and the nurse is like.. "Well you can't have an epidural now because you need to feel to push" I stared at the clock on the wall a lot after that. By this time I didn't want anyone to talk to me or touch me... especially my husband! Another two hours later (just after noon on Thursday), after about an hour of pushing, my son, Greg, was born. I love my son but I think the first thing I said to the nurse was "Are they going to bring me lunch?" Then I checked all his toes and fingers and such. My second son was a bit different in the fact that we went in the hospital to be induced when I was four days over-due on a Thursday. Once again my body wasn't showing any signs of getting ready to deliver, but this time they barely started the process when the labor pains started. My husband didn't get a chance to go home this time and the contractions came harder quicker than before. So I needed him much more throughout the night. At one point I got a shot in the hip which helped me sleep (and gave my husband a break) for about 2 hours. The next morning though they thought the contractions had stopped and again I hadn't progressed very far so they turned on the pit. And turned around and turned it off again. Yep, I was 3 cm, but this time I wasn't taking any chances. I told the nurse to please have the anestesiologist come up here quickly. I don't really remember how long it took him to get there, just that he did and I got my epidural. As I was getting it though my husband was herded by the nurse down to get a snack (he hadn't eaten since the night before) and while standing outside the nurses station he fainted (from lack of sleep and nutrition). So here I am curled in a ball on the bed and I can see my husband being wheeled down the hall in a wheelchair :) He wouldn't let them wheel him into the room. They said it was the most graceful faint they've ever seen. Once the epidural hit I was in heaven. I could still tell when there was a contraction, but I wasn't in pain. And once again I went from 3cm to ready to push in an hour. Kevin was wheeled down the hall at about 10am and by 11:30am his son had arrived in this world. It was so much easier to get him there this time. I think part of it was because with the epidural still having some effect I couldn't feel how completely I was pushing... that is until I could walk later that day because every muscle in my body was stiff and sore (my arms, my back... everything). And it was nice to not be so exhausted afterwards that I couldn't enjoy him a little more. My third child was a girl and she was indeed totally different from the first two in many ways. First of all I went in to labor without any inducement on Friday afternoon. This was great! But once again it takes me forever to progress to the 3cm mark. We went in at 11pm Friday night and since I was barely over 1 cm they sent us home. My contraction with her didn't really ever seem regular until they were so close we couldn't time them. :) I tried to tell them that once I hit 3 cm I would go fast but they attibuted it to the pit. So we went home, uncertain how the night would go. Luckily our friend didn't mind staying the night so we could leave at a moments notice. It actually turned out for the best ... I was even able to get some rest that night. I was amazed. The next morning the contractions were still just the same. Coming around 5-15 minutes apart.. like I said.. not regular at all. But I called in because I started seeing some spotting, something I'd never seen before. This was around 8am. The nurse said "Take your time. It sounds like it will be a while. Go ahead and take a shower." I took a shower but when I got out I just had a niggly feeling that we needed to leave and get to the hospital. We left and during the 15 minute drive to the hospital the pains grew steadily worse. By the time we got to the hospital I could hardly walk. We got to the labor delivery rooms and I was 4 cm. I told the nurse. I want an epidural. she said ok and even began the paper work right away. This was at 9am. I could hardly answer her questions. I signed the concent form (barely... it didn't even look like my signature) and they checked to see where I was. The nurse said.. nope. You're 8 cm and we need to get the doctor. It wasn't anything horrible... my water just hadn't broken and our little baby couldn't go any farther until it did. So the Doctor broke the water and in a couple of pushes Poof! it's a baby girl. That was shortly after 10am. She has definitely been our miracle baby (my episiotomy stitches didn't even hurt after her... I still haven't figured that one out) It was the easiest delivery I'd had... I just wish I hadn't had to stay in a room with 2 other mom's/babies (one who was colicky) and that the hospital didn't have these rules against babies who sleep through the night from the get go! :)
