Gina Marie's Birth Story
By STuell@aol.com

I have to start this story on the morning of Friday August 30, 1997. I had a scheduled Non Stress Test at the hospital and a Doctors appointment immediately following. I went to the NST and everything looked great with the baby but I had three contractions while on the monitor. The nurse asked me if I had felt them, I said yes that all they felt like was period cramps and that I have been having them for three days now.

She let me leave and I proceeded to see my midwife. The midwife came in and said that she was talking to the doctor and that they would like to induce me a week early due to my high blood pressure and that the sonogram I had three days earlier showed that my amonic fluid was a little low. I wasn't thrilled with the idea but agreed. She then proceeded to check me and I was two centimeters dilated and she said that I might not make it nine days. She said that the doctor wanted to come in and talk to me about the results of my sonogram.

He came in and said that they found a small cyst low in the pelvic area of the baby and that we needed to get a sonogram done when she was born and possibly a MRI or Cat Scan. He said that she possibly would need surgery. I was devastated and asked him if he could induce any sooner he said yes so we scheduled it for 2:00 p.m. Tuesday Sept 2nd.

I went downstairs and called my husband I was very upset and headed home. I went out to my van and it was completely dead, obviously it was the battery. I called my girlfriend and she came and picked me up. When I got home, we called the doctor and my husband was able to talk to him and ask some questions we both felt better but still worried.

My sister came over to pick up our two boys Eric age 7 and Adam almost 6 to spend the night at her house, as already planned. My husband and I went to Burger King for dinner and then went to get a new battery for the van. We came home and I tried to go to sleep. I didn't fall asleep till midnight. I woke up at 2:00 am to use the bathroom and couldn't fall back to sleep I was getting those period like cramps again.

I got up watched a bunch of Leave it to Beaver reruns, emptied the dishwasher, put some more stuff in my suitcase. I tried to wake Scott up at 3:30 and tell him that I thought that I was starting my labor he said "Sue go back to bed and think happy thoughts" and rolled over and went back to sleep. I watched more TV and started to time these cramps. There was no set pattern and I was not in any pain but, couldn't sleep either. I got on the Internet at 5:00am and talked with a Mom from California. I told her I was in what I thought was early stages of labor. She told me to make some herbal tea and try to get some rest. I made the tea but never drank it.

At 5:45 I decide to wake Scott again and I told him to get up that he needed to take me to the hospital to at least get checked. He said "Sue your not having this baby till Tuesday" I told him I didn't care what he thought but I had to go and now. He got up took a shower, made coffee, blew dried his hair and then we were off. I got a bad contraction on the road the first one!!

When we arrived at he hospital at 6:30. I had a few more while walking up to labor and delivery. The nurse Sherry put me in a labor and delivery room and hooked me up to the monitor and then checked me I was six centimeters dilated. I started getting some pretty painful contractions and asked her if I could have an epidural she called the midwife and she said yes but things were progressing quite quickly. Sherry finally got the IV started while I was going through transition. When she checked me again I was complete. She called for two more nurses one to help me and one for the baby who would be here very shortly.

Once I was able to relax my legs, my water broke and out came 6lb 9 oz Gina Marie. Born at 7:09 am, forty minutes after arriving at the hospital. My midwife missed the birth but showed up about two minutes after. Her husband was driving and ended up getting pulled over for speeding but the officer ended up escorting them to the hospital.

I will never forget those nurses who delivered our baby for us!! They let Gina stay with us for about two hours before taking her to the nursery for her tests. With the help of God and a lot of prayers the sonogram showed nothing!!! Gina has made our family complete and her brothers are madly in love with her as well as the rest of the family!!!!!
