Jessica's Birth Story
By Debra Baker

Jessica was born in 1979. I was only eighteen and didn't read more than the little books the OB/GYN gave me in the office. We took a prep class in the hospital (big mistake).

I had a sixish hour labor with her. I was in labor when my mom flew in from CA. Things weren't that bad until we went into the hospital. They broke my water, gave me an enima, put a fetal monitor on on me and left me to labor in a small unwindowed room with nothing to do but watch the clock on the wall. When the sack was gone, the contractions became intense.

After a couple of hours, I felt the need to empty my bowels. I told the nurse so in less polite terms. She told me to go ahead and push. I told her I was going to take a dump on her clean floor. She told me it was the baby, I told her it was going to be a turd, and took a dump on the floor.

I was moved to a standard delivery room and strapped onto the table, flat on my back with my legs tied into stirrups. The nice doctor gave me a massive episotomy and I birthed Jessica with three pushes (9lb.8oz.) They let me see her and whisked her away.

I wanted to hold her but they wanted me in the hospital room. I asked for her and they told me to take a shower. I went into the shower and passed out. When I came to, I demanded my baby. At this point, they brought her into me. I was able to nurse her and get to know her. The sweet little baby made all the indignities of the hospital worthwhile.

When I conceived my second child, I started to question all the hospital procedures.
