When I found out I was pregnant, I was actually devastated. It couldn't of happened at a worse time. I was still in my first year of college, and had finally figured out what I wanted to do with my life. My then boyfriend (now husband) practically ordered me to get an abortion. It wasn't the right time for him to become a father, emotionally. Finacially, we were both okay. But I refused to have an abortion, since I had one the previous year. That was such a painful experience that I could never go through that again. I don't really know how I got pregnant again because I had been so careful with taking all the precautions. I guess it was just meant to be.
After I decided to keep the baby, my boyfriend started to accept little by little. He wasn't going to let me leave to do it on my own. He wanted to take responsibility for his actions as well. And he was with me all the way.
My first trimester was terrible. My morning sickness was the worst. I was throwing up at least 4 times a day, and got to a point where I couldn't keep anything down at all. Not even water. So I began going to the hospital to get IV fluids every week so I wouldn't get dehydrated, in my second month. By the fourth month, things were getting better. I was only throwing up about once a day, and was able to keep some stuff down. By the begining of the fifth month, morning sickness disappeared without a trace! But that's was the end of one problem, and the begining of the next.
At 22 and 1/2 weeks, my water broke. At first I wasn't sure what it was because it was only a slight trickle. I thought that I should go to the hospital to get it checked out though. When I got to the walk-in OB/GYN clinic at my hospital, I told them what happened and they had me waiting to see a doctor for over an hour. I thought it couldn't be anything serious since I was waiting so long. And if my water had broken, then I thought they could just patch it up and send me home! Boy was I wrong!
Once I got into see the doctor, they had me lie down and made me cough and a bunch of other things. Then all of a sudden they had me rushed up to labor and delivery. It was happening so fast that I was getting very worried! I had just gotten used to the idea of having a baby around, but I didn't want it yet!
Upstairs, they started hooking me up to IV's, the fetal monitors and took my blood and doing all the routine procedures. A nurse came in to tell me that my baby would probably be born that night, and I would have to have a C-section. At that point, I was as scared as I ever was in my life!
They wouldn't let me get up at all. I had to lay flat. I couldn't even get up to use the bathroom. I was not having any contractions, but was leaking a lot of amniotic fluid. The doctors were still deciding whether to let me stay on my back for awhile to see what happens, or to deliver the baby.
Meanwhile, a doctor from the ICU came up to speak with me. She told me that there was a very small chance that my baby would survive since I was only 22 weeks along. And if it did survive, it would probably be very sick, and have a lot of lifelong problems. She asked my boyfriend and I whether we wanted them to do everything they could to save the baby, or just let us hold it, and let it go on it's own. By that time, I was in tears and shut out everything else she said.
I don't really know what happened after that. I suppose that since I wasn't in real labor, they decided not to deliver the baby. I was moved down to the maternity ward where I stayed in bed for the two months. The doctors were pretty sure that I would deliver within that time.
When I was seven months, they let me go home. I was no longer leaking the amniotic fluid, and it was at a good level. I was still to remain off my feet as much as possible and I was to come back twice a week for a checkup, two fluid checks, and fetal monitoring.
After that, my pregnancy progressed smoothly along. At 39 weeks, my water broke again. I went to the hospital, was 1 cm dialated and not having any contractions. After about 6 hours and no contractions, they induced me. They gave me pitocin, and I had an epidural. I started pushing the next morning. After an hour and a half of pushing, my daughter, Daisy Maliha was born on February 3, 1997, 4 days before my actual due date. She was a healthy 6 lbs, 11ozs. And the actual birth wasn't as bad as I thought it would be!
I knew almost all of the doctors and nurses and they were all amazed that I delivered a full term, healthy baby. The chances of of carrying to term after your water breaks that early in the pregnancy is unheard of. I was very lucky! All in all, it was worth it. And I can't wait to have my next baby!
