Birth Story
By Cheryl Murray

My first two births and pregnancies were quite routine, my first was 9 days early, the second was born on the day after her due date. They were each approximately 10 hour labours with epidurals at some point in between and both required forcep deliveries.

My third was due when my second was 15 months old, however on the eve of my birthday when I was 7 months pregnant I started to hemmorage. We drove to the hospital to find out what was happening, they informed us that they couldn't handle a delivery at this stage of the pregnancy, they just didn't have a special care nursery equipped for it, so I went by ambulance to a larger hospital with a special care nursery. They diagnosed me as "placenta previa" and prepped me for an emergency Caesarean. I was scared to death, they put me completely under for the operation and I don't remember anything until the next day when I remember waking to find my best friend Alizon at my bedside. The paediatrician came in a few minutes later to discuss the condition of the baby, who was 4pounds 8 ounces at birth (not a bad weight for 7 months), he was in an incubator which was helping him to breathe, I was incredibly drugged and only remember this in a hazy way. I know that at some point I went to see him but don't remember seeing him for the first time, the nurses had brought me a picture of him so that I wouldn't be shocked when I did see him. Brock was in the hospital for about three weeks after his birth, I would go daily to nurse him and pumped milk so they could give it to him when I was away.

My next pregnancy, 8 years later, was filled with fear that I would have the same complication as my third pregnancy, there was an added "complication" that I was now 35 and would be 36 when the baby was born. I had two ultrasounds, the second used only to monitor the placenta and make sure it was in the right place. We also went to discuss screening for birth defects, although we decided not to have any of these screening processes (other than the ultrasound) we would take what we got.

From the 7 month point, I was terrified that I would give birth at any moment. I was also afraid that I would have to have a Caesarean again. Because this was my husband's first child, we took a "refresher" birth class through our hospital, which scared me even more, all that talk about breathing and the different stages that could last for hours and hours, and again the possibility that I would have to have surgery.

My husband is a vegetarian and tries to eat only organic produce, he had heard that raspberry tea was a great aid in labour, that labours were shorter and easier when you drank a cup of raspberry tea daily. I drank the tea for the last few weeks of my labour (irregularly, not daily). On the morning of my due date, I awoke at 4:30a.m. with painful cramps, which I tried to dismiss. Because it was my due date I thought it was all in my head. I wandered around the house for half an hour or so, packing my bag, reading a little bit, finally at 5a.m. I decided to wake my husband and call my babysitter. We left for the hospital at 5:20a.m. We checked in, I threw up, went to the washroom and kept insisting that I had to have a b.m. They set up the birthroom and checked me a few minutes later, and said that I was fully dilated and ready to go at any point. We waited for the doctor and just as I was screaming that I couldn't do it any more, out popped Alexander at 6:00a.m., no pain killers, and a completely natural delivery. It was the most incredible experience of my life.

Every birth is a different experience (even though I said that my first two were very similar, the in between steps were different). Thank you for "listening" to my stories.
