Well this is the story of close I came to losing my second child. I had a miscarriage back in March 1998. I got pregnant three months the day that I lost my first child. Everything was going really well. I had the usual things like sore breasts and morning sickness and heartburn but everything was going well.

I had my five month check up and my doctor had the results of my third ultrasound back so we were going over them when she told me that everything was good except for one thing and that was my placenta was low lying but not to worry. I said okay I will not worry and scheduled another ultrasound for 6 weeks and that was it.

After Christmas I had my ultrasound and then seen my doctor a week later. She then again said that it was still low lying but she had seen cases where it has gone back up and not to worry. That was the last time I seen my doctor because I went to another doctor for the delivery of my baby. My doctor does not deliver anymore. I seen him a week later and we began to discuss the options of delivery. He assured me that I would have a natural delivery.

But there was that 50/50 chance that I would have a c- section. I was sure that I would have a regular delivery even though I had a low placenta. I was in my 33rd week and I began to hemmorage at home. I went to the Pembroke General Hospital where they told me that they could not touch me because I was under 36 weeks so I was sent to Ottawa. That is about 2 hours away from where I live.

When I got to Ottawa they did an Ultrasound and they could hardly see anything because they were using a portable ultrasound so they decided to give me some stuff to help develop my sons lungs. I was hoping not to deliver early. The next day I was told that I was not going home until I delivered my baby. I was admitted Feb 20. So I had an ultrasound every week.

The first week they found that my Placenta split in two pieces and was being held together by a blood vessal and that the cord was lying in my birth canal as well as my son was breech. We also found out that day that we were having a boy.

The next week things looked the same except that there was a blood clot lying in my birth canal. The next week which is my 35th they discovered that lying in my birth canal that there was a piece of cord a blood vessel, and a blood clot. So we knew that we were having a c-section. So it was scheduled for Mrach 16 and I was thrilled.

I had to sign three consent forms one for a c-section, the other for a blood transfusion in case something went wrong and they could could not close a a section that was bleeding bad and the other form was for a them to remove my uterus and what ever else they had to so they could save my live if my uterus was stuck or something I certainly did not want that at all.

I was scared but I was convinced nothing would go wrong. My husband came to visit me on March 13 he stayed late along with my best friend and her husband and their two week old son. They left the hospital that night at 11:00 PM. I got up went to the washroom and then went to bed I woke up at about 11:45 PM and felt like I had to go to the bathroom I moved my left and felt like I peed myself. I rang for a nurse she came asked what I needed and told her what I thought was wrong. She then looked with a flash light and discovered that I was bleeding before I knew what was happening she had left to get help.

I called my husband in a panic at my best friends and he had gone to return a breast pump so I was scared. They rushed to the labor room and told I was having this baby tonight. I freaked and told them not till my husband arrived they told me they could not wait. They took me to the operating room a prepped me for the c-section. They gave me the epidural and they some graval because I felt sick. I wanted to be put to sleep but they told me no. So I was even more scared.

My husband arrived 15 minutes before they were ready to do the c-section. Before I knew it my son was born on March 14, 1999 at 12:56 AM and the Ottawa Civic Hospital. He weighed in at 7 pounds 5 ounces and 19 inches long. He was a month early but really healthy.

They were able to save everything and also I never needed the blood transfusions I was lucky. I went home three days later. I spent 30 days in the hospital and it was long. I was just glad that I was in the best care possible.

My son is now 6 months old and is very healthy and is doing great no problems at all. He has developed well and that is wonderful. Thank you for taking the time to read my story.
