Camdon Keith's Birth Story
By Beth Mathews

It all started with a road trip to Whitcha Kansas. My midwife is my Aunt Kathy. I was 8 days late when we went to go see her. This was my third child and all of them arrived EXACTLY ten days late from my due date! On the nineth day I woke up feeling very strange-this sounds very strange but all I could do was laugh! I did not think anything was funny I just could not stop laughing! I laughed all during my internal exam in which I was told I was dilated to 5! No contractions. I told Kathy to look at my body which was malded all over-like your skin looks when you get cold-like little squares. She told me that she thought I would go into labor anytime. All the laughing and skin changes was due to hormones changing!

At approximately 1:00pm my water broke when I was walking on the treadmill. The other midwife, Wendy, was typing Camdons' birth certificate and talking to me when I was walking. She said are you sure? I said next time I felt it go I would tell her. About 1 minute later it happened. We went running to the bathroom-passing my husband who was watching tv-I squated over the toliet as the water just pored! She put a strip under the stream and made the comment of "This is pointless-it has definitly broke!" We both laughed again.

My labor did not start so I ate some dinner. Later about 9:00pm I gave up on the trying to get labor started and went to bed. I prayed that my labor would start. At approximately 10:00pm it started. I was praying "Okay God let them get stronger and longer." It happened! I moved to the shower at about midnight. That was wonderful! I labored alone until about 1:00am. Thought I was really getting somewhere so I woke my husband (Todd) and told him to go get Kathy. She checked me and I was only at 6! I was very unhappy! The contractions were one on top of the other with no break in between!

Finally after trying every labor position we could think of Kathy checked again-only at 7. I starte saying I CANNOT do this. I ask for drugs-she said all I have is Tylenol-I said I'll take it :o) I did not get the tylenol. Instead she helped my cervix open through a contraction. She said it felt like the babies head was stuck on my cervix. It was very dry since it had been so long since my water broke. I went 8,9,10 in about 30 minutes.Ready to push! I would push and then tell a joke. Everyone was laughing and telling me that they had never heard anyone tell birthing jokes between pushes. I felt it lightened the mood since my labor was so hard.

Camdons' head was born in 2 pushes-loose cord around his neck that we pulled over his head. Next contraction we had the whole baby! I pushed about 6 times total! In the middle of me pushing another lady called and said her baby was coming! After I had Camdon-right in the middle of the living room floor!-Kathy flew out the door into the car and on the car phone to the other lady telling the other Dad what to do! She got there and TWO minutes later she delivered another baby! Little girl! In the process of getting there she bottomed out her car and had to get the transmission repaired! She is my inspiration!
