Son # 1 born in the UK at a maternity facility. This one was born in a normal bed and was quite exciting until the midwife cut me with a pair of scissors and no anaesthetic! My husband almost fainted, this son weighed 6lbs. 1oz. Son # 2 born in Cardiff, South Wales, due date 17th December, pre-natal visit 23rd December. I drove my husband to work and proceeded to get myself to the hospital for my checkup, hoping they would not keep me for Christmas as Son #1 was only 16 months old. The Doctor examined me and told me to go home and he would decide what to do with me after Christmas. I called my husband and instructed him to pick up a turkey for Christmas because I was not staying, I then went to the Ladies room for my mid-stream sample (why?) and my waters broke. I called for a nurse and she helped me get to the delivery room. I did not even have time to undress completely, I literally got onto the delivery table and started to push. My husband in the meantime had arrived and asked for me, he was told that I was in the delivery room. He rushed in just in time for one more push when I gave birth to a 10lb. 1oz. son, the same weight as the turkey he had bought! From the time my membranes ruptured to the time Jamie was born was 23 minutes! Fast forward 7 years... now I live in Canada. Son # 3 After a lot of effort to conceive I finally was expecting again, in my 8th month I developed pneumonia and had to take antibiotics. Because of a decrease in heart rate my doctor sent me for amniocentesis as he thought he may have to induce me. He admitted me to hospital immediately and a specialist induced me manually, by opening my cervix with his fingers! Never have I been in so much pain. Michael was born on December 19th., after 7 hours labour assisted by an epidural, and was whisked away before we could bond at all. After about 2 hours we were told that he was in intensive care in respiratory distress, suffering from hyaline membrane disease. We were advised that he would probably not last the night and that we should consider having him baptised, which we did. I cried for 6 hours straight, and swore that I would never leave his side until he was ready to go home. I am happy to say that Mike is now 16 years old and an honour student in High School. Son # 4 My last ditch attempt to have a daughter, oh well! This pregnancy was almost normal until one day I got pins and needles in my arm and my speech was slurred. I mentioned this to my doctor and all hell broke loose. I was diagnosed as having had a TIA ( Transient Ischemic Attack) like a Mini- Stroke. This happened on 2 other occasions and consequently I had to take large amount of aspirin, to thin my blood. I had a 32 hour labour with an epidural after 18 hours. Then my placenta separated and I was rushed into the delivery room where I was given a huge episiotomy and Robert was pulled out, screaming and peeing. I am now the envy of every woman I know, in that I am surrounded by men! I just had not planned on actually giving birth to them. I could not have accomplished all of these traumatic events if not for the support of my husband, who despite his fear of all things medical was with me every step of the way. I will say though, that I have had a chance to experience birth both naturally and medicated and I can truthfully say that I would go natural every time. I think that I recovered quicker, the epidural left me drugged and unable to do anything for the first 12 hours. I have written a letter to each of my 4 sons, describing their birth day and the events surrounding their start to life. I will know when the right time is to give it to them. Love to all Mothers, it is the best job you will ever have.
