Anthony Cross's Birth Story
By Kim

One day last November, I ran into our bedroom and hugged my husband and asked him if he wanted to start having kids. I have always been afraid of getting pregnant and he couldn't believe what he was hearing. I was afraid to get pregnant because of morning sickness and all the horror stories that I have heard. I have also never been in the hospital or even had stitches for that matter. I went off the pill in December and was pregnant by the middle of February.

My husband and I were very happy and excited. We were in the process of building a new house and we were hoping that it would be done by the time the baby was born. I had a textbook pregnany. No problems other than a few urinary tract infections. I gained 35 lbs. but didn't look like it at all. I carried the baby well and stayed very small. Over the last 4 weeks, the doctors sent me for some additional tests because they thought I was measuring small for 36 weeks. I had a few extra ultrasounds and non stress tests but everything came back normal. They decided to induce me 4 days before my due date just in case the baby was not getting the nourishment it needed.

I checked into the hospital at 2:00 am on November 3rd, 1998. They started pitocin at 3:15 am. I was actually in labor when we checked in because my contractions were 3 minutes apart and I was 2 centimeters but I never felt anything. Once the pitocin was started, the doctor decided to break my water at about 4:00 am. This is when the contractions got really uncomfortable and they were soon on top of one another.

At 5:25 am, the nurse checked and said I was 4 centimeters. I kept complaining about the pressure I was feeling so she decided to check me again at about 5:35 am. She couldn't believe it. I was 10 centimeters!!!

During this eventful 15 minutes, my husband was out smoking a cigarette. When he came back up, a nurse grabbed him and said "It's time!!" He ran back into the room and was told to grab my left leg. I kept telling the nurse that I can't be ready and there must be something wrong. I was in complete shock or maybe confused is a better word. My husband originally didn't want to see the birth for fear of passing out but he watched the whole thing. He was a great labor coach and was even better during the delivery. He gave me constant encourgement.

I only had to push during 5 contractions and our baby boy was born into the world at 5:55 am. He was 6 lbs. 6 oz., 19 inches and healthy. Start to finish was 2 hours and 45 minutes. The nurses and doctors said I broke the hospital record for a first time mom. I have been so blessed with my new house (which by the way, we moved in on November 1st, just in the nick of time!!!), my new baby and a wonderful husband.

Anthony is the best thing that has ever happened to me and I will never forget the first time I looked into his eyes. I could kiss and hug him a million times and it wouldn't be enough. Nothing else matters to me now. He's my world!!!!!
