Andrew's Birth Story
By Robyn

Andrew's trip into the world started on April 26, 1999 a little after 11pm. My boyfriend and I were babysitting his nephew when I felt this unbelievable pressure right below my bladder. I thought I had to go pee but when I attempted to sit up my water broke--all over my boyfriends sister's couch (it was a HUGE mess). After that the contractions hit me like a brick. They were 2 minutes apart, and lasted about 90 seconds. I went to the hospital at midnight where the nurse told me I was 2cm dialated, contractions were 40 seconds apart and that I'd probably be in labour all night. I was in pain. Then I went through an irregualar contraction--it lasted 47 minutes. It would peek and then start to fall and then peek again without ending. At this point I was on my hands and knees crying and begging for an epidural. To my surprise I was denied it! I was told that I could handle it and that I didn't need the medication.

This is when the nurse was getting angry. She was telling me not to be a wuss and to get back on the bed. 2am rolled around and the urge to push came. I couldn't believe how powerful the urge was. The nurse at this point was yelling at me to stop pushing. I managed to pull on the emergency cord and the doctor showed up. He told me that I was 10cm and that I should push. At this point my labour coach and my boyfriend showed up (they needed to find a replacement babysitter for his nephew). I pushed for over an hour and Andrew finally popped out 3:16am.

I thought the worse was over with. Until I felt the needle and thread in my bum. The doctor (who I later found out was an intern and this was his first labour) was stiching me up, without any pain medication. He spent 45 minutes stiching me up and I felt everything.

The sad thing about this labour is I live in a country where I should be allowed to make decisions for myself. If I don't want a natural labour I shouldn't have to go through one.
