No one had even heard of Lamaze or prepared childbirth back then. When I had my oldest daughter, Christina, my husband was not even allowed in the delivery room. The doctor gave me general anesthesia, even though I did not want it, and it wasn't until the birth of my second daughter that I really accepted my first daughter as truly being mine. The hospital wakes you up in your room and brings you a baby you've never seen until this moment!! I'm sure it's hard to imagine. Jill, my second daughter was born to a room full of nursing students. The entire nursing class decided to witness her birth since no one else was in labor that day. With Jill, I had a spinal and couldn't move the lower half of my body for a whole day. They wouldn't even put my head on a pillow for fear of a spinal headache. Epidurals were not even heard of back in those days. By the time I was pregnant with my son, Lamaze was becoming really big, and so was Leboyer. I had my son with the Leboyer method even though my doctor thought i was crazy and did not want to deliver him. But it was without a doubt the most incredible experience of my life and I wished I could have done the same with both my daughters. The most exciting experience of all is that I have been with my daughters when they have given birth to their own children. Birth, without a doubt, has got to be the most wonderful experience of life. I am expecting my third grandchild in April and can't wait. All of you who have the opportunity to have children now are so very lucky you can really enjoy your birth experiences to the fullest, and I wish each and every one of you the greatest success and congratulations on your new little ones.
