Allison's Birth Story
By Rhonda

It all started when I was 21 yrs. old, and I was a few weeks late so I took a pregnancy test not really thinking I could be pregnant. Well I was wrong, that test and the 3 following ones I took all came out positive. I was in denial for awhile and so was my boyfriend(at the time)He did evrything he could to talk me into abording it. I was dead aginst abortion and decided I made this baby and I will take responsability for it. My pregnancy progressed with no complications, and eventually I was really excited about this little one. My boyfriend left me right from the beginning, But at 5 Mo. along I met a really special guy(when I least expected to) who gave me the support I needed at this time. (who is now my husband).

My due date of April 25th came and went. On the morning of the 28th I realized I lost themucus plug. I waited for awhile to see if this was labor beginning but nothing else was happening. I called my mother to tell her my news and she said to sit tight for awhile and that this was probably it.

I told my new boyfriend (of 4 Mo.) that I thought this was the day, and he got excited. He said If I wanted him there during the birth that he would be, I told him no. (I was embarrased to let him see me at my worst.)My girl friend was planning on being my labor coach and I figured that was best.

As the day went on I gradually got contractions that were becoming stronger. My girl friend called from work (also were I am employed) to see how things were going. I told her I was having contractions but not to rush home yet, they still were not very regular. She only had a few hrs. left anyway. The plan was I would be at her house by the time she got home (she lived only a block from the hospital I was delivering at). Befor she hung up the phone I heard her announce to everyone that my labor had begun and I heard the roar of my fellow employees cheers.

By 10:30 we were on the road to her house. When we got there I made my boyfriend come in and wait with us. We all sat around and watched movies untill contractions were painfull and 5 min. apart. By this time it was 1:00 am and I called the hosp. to see if I should come in yet, but the nurse said to wait for awhile and take a shower to ease the pain and not to come in befor contractions were 3 min apart.

By 3:45am the pain was really intense and contractions were bouncing back and forth between 3 and 5 min. apart. My girl friend said we waited enough and we were going in weather the nurses liked it or not.

By the time we got there and got situated contractions were 2 min apart but when the nurse checked me I was only 3 cm dialated (which I allready had been for 3 weeks).

The Dr. came in and broak my water to speed things up, then left again. I had sent my friends out of the room for this(at this point I was still trying to be modest). I called them in and told them we were in for a long night. I still did not want my boyfriend to go home like I thought I would . He was happy to stay and be there for me, and I was glad to have him ther for support.

By morning somtime I still had not dialated anymore so they gave me pitocin through an IV, and also some kind of pain killer to take the edge off. It helped between contractions for awile(it made me sleep) but I woak up for evry contraction screaming in pain. It was funny because prior to labor I told my self I would not scream and cry like all them other ladies were.

Soon after pitocin contractions were one on top of each other and unberable . The nurse talked me into a epidural even though I was dead set not to get one.I did not like the idea of the effects it could have on the baby and I was deathly afraid of the idea of a catheder in my spine. By the time they got it ready for me and I lookeed up and saw the size of the needle I changed my mind and made them put it away (with my boyfriends encouragement). That was ok though, soon after I was checked and at a 10, and they said I could push.

My nurses were pretty nice. One of them predicted the baby would be a girl (I also just new it would be a girl) It would be born at 12:30pm , and it would be 8lbs.

I pushed for about a half an hr. The Dr. came in and gave me an episiotamy after a local anistetic and at 12:30 out she came. 8 lbs. 1oz just like the nurse predicted.

Allison was 21 in. long and screaming just like her mom was when she came out. It was deturmined after some Xrays the following day that she some how broak her colar boan on the way out. I had to pin her arm in place for a few weeks and it healed fine.

Today Allison is 19 1/2 Mo. old and the light of my life! In March my husband and I are expecting our second one.
