Taylor's Birth Story
By Christie
My husband and I were shocked when we found out I was pregnant with our
first child. But we were excited. She was due on August 3, 1998.
The
pregnancy was really great, I had no problems at all. The only reason I
knew I was pregnant was because I gained weight--I was never tired or sick
or grumpy. By the time the due date got here, I still wasn't showing any
signs of going into labor. I wasn't dialating or anything. My doctor was
going on vacation out of the country a few days after the due date, so he
decided to go ahead and induce labor on August 5th, 1998.
I went into the
hospital at 6:00 PM on August 5th to be induced. Since it was my first
pregnancy, they were sure it would be at least 24 hrs before anything
started happening. I was too excited to go to sleep that night, so the
nurse brought me a sleeping pill because they didn't think anything would
happen yet.
I woke up a few hours later hurting a little bit. My husband
called the nurse and she decided to go ahead and give me my epidural.
Since it hadn't been long ago that I'd taken the sleeping pill, I drifted
back off to sleep pretty quickly. At 5:00 AM the next morning the nurse
came in to check on me and discovered that my water had broken, and I was
dialated 10 cm, and Taylor was on her way with or without help!
I was
still knocked out from the sleeping pills and couldn't feel anything
because of the epidural, so the only "memory" I have is what my husband
and mother have told me about it. My doctor wasn't expecting things to
happen so soon, and he lived a good 30 minutes away from the hospital.
The nurse told my husband and mother to get gloves and masks on because
they might have to help deliver the baby, but luckily my doctor walked in
with time enough to do the episiotomy. Taylor was born at 5:23 AM, only
23 minutes after the nurse discovered that I was having her.
Taylor was a
perfect little baby. She is now 3 years old, and I am 26 weeks pregnant
with #2. This pregnancy has been the total opposite, too. I still have
morning sickness, horrible back aches, and I am just
really "uncomfortable". We haven't found out the sex yet, but we have a
good feeling that it is a boy. I have heard that after you have one
child, the following deliveries are always easier, but I don't think it's
possible to have an easier delivery than I did with Taylor.
Sometimes I
regret not being awake and being able to experience her coming into the
world, but I hear horrible stories of pain and all sorts of things, and I
can't take pain at all, so I am glad I didn't have to experience any of
that.
I am scared to death of labor this time though, because even though
I have a 3 year old daughter, I have no idea what labor and delivery are
really like.
