Mason's Birth Story
By Katie
In May of '99 my parents came out to visit me, my husband and our daughter
in Washington. My husband had just re-enlisted in the Navy, and our
little girl (Emily) was about to turn 3. I had just quit smoking and was
telling my parents about how easy it was. I just woke up and didn't smoke
anymore.
The day after they got there we were in the store and I just felt like I
needed to buy a pregnancy test. I wasn't late yet, but I just felt
different. I took the test the next morning and it was positive! I went
in to the room where my step-mom was sleeping and was jumping on the bed
saying I'm pregnant!!
The pregnancy was pretty easy, for the most part. I went to the Navy
Hospital for my prenatal care and my doctor was great. In the first 5
months I gained 5 pounds. Then in September I went to visit family back
east and the plane ride was terrible! This baby did not like to fly.
After arriving I did not feel the baby move for a few days so I went in
for an ultrasound. I found out it was a boy!!! I was so excited! Our
stay was uneventful, but the plane ride back was even worse.
Then in December we decided to go visit the east coast again. This time
we were driving. My doctor was against it, but I really wanted to go. So
we drove 3,000 miles, knowing that I was due in less than 2 months. When
we got back from our visit, I was having terrible back pain. After 2
days I finally went to the dr. I had an infection in my kidneys/urinary
tract.
The rest of the pregnancy was ok. I was huge and miserable and just
waiting to go. My friend Kristi, who was in nursing school, insisted I
go on a 3 mile walk with her one day, trying to start my labor (Emmy did
not enjoy that walk!).
My due date was February 8, 2000. At 5AM Kristi called me and told me to
make sure I went in labor today. She would be doing her clinicals in the
nursery at the Naval Hospital and wanted to give the baby his first bath.
Well, on the 8th, I got up and took Emily to dance class. Nothing was
happening.
That night I felt the baby turn, like spin in a circle, and settle down
into the cervix.
I fell asleep on the couch that night with my daughter and woke up when I
heard a loud *pop*. I didn't know what it was. I looked at the clock.
It was 10 AM.
I stood up and the water gushed. This was it. It was the 9th.
I went upstairs and told my husband that my water broke. He jumps out of
bed and starts running around like an idiot. I told him to go back to
bed, I was getting a shower. I took a shower, packed my bag, packed
Emily's bag, and finally we were out the door. I was having contractions,
but they were bearable.
We got closer to the hospital and I started telling my husband to drive
faster or pull over and let me drive, I couln't sit down all the way.
We got to the hospital and went up to the 4th floor.
They sent me into the check in room, looked at my cervix and said "get
this girl a room!". I was 6 cm. I got in my room and was given a gown
and the nurse said put this on and lay down on the bed. I told her I
would when the contraction quit. She came back in about 3 minutes later
and told me to lay down and I told her it hadn't quit yet. I had them
page Kristi for me. I laid down and someone was working on an IV. I had
a hard contraction and closed my eyes, when I opened them again, there
was Kristi. It was her lunch break. I started telling people that I had
to push. They said not to. I said, "I have to!" About 1 minute later,
there was my baby. Red hair, bruised face, bloodshot eyes, and quiet as
a mouse in the stunned doctor's arms.
It was 11:11 AM.
He weighed 8 pounds 11 ounces and was 20 1/4" long.
I sat up and asked if I could go home now. (They said no!)
Everyone kept asking us his name and he was so purple that I just couldn't
name him. I couln't tell what he looked like yet. So, I waited until the
next day and decided on Mason Anthony. He is an angel and we love him
very much.
He is still in a hurry all the time, but I can keep up!
Mason has a web page, if you would like to see it.
