Tyler's Birth Story
By Terri

Our baby was planned. A sibling to share us with our dd Ashley (3 yrs.old). We found out in November that I was pregnant. When we told our dd we were going to have a baby, she told us that it was a boy...named Tyler, who liked blue sleepers and soft hats. I told her that it might be a girl...she would not discuss the possibility, she wanted a brother. At our 8 week ultrasound, she asked the dr. to get him out. You could already see a little baby...he looked like a peanut. At our 20 week ultrasound, the tech asked Ashley if she was ready to see if she was going to get a brother or a sister. Ashley told her she was getting a brother! The tech said well lets hope she isn't disappointed. As soon as the baby was on the screen, he showed us his boy parts. Quite proudly and for quite a while! Ashley looked me straight in the eye and said I told you, Mommy. So I asked her what his middle name was going to be, since Tyler was now his first name. She thought for only a moment before replying "Festus"! We were all laughing so hard...she has been watching too much Gunsmoke! I thought she liked the show because of the horses, not the town drunk! LOL Well, from there on out everything went smoothly until June. On the 4th, I was placed on bedrest! I was having constant contractions every 5-15 minutes, some hard enough to make me cry. My blood pressure would go sky high when I walked to the bathroom. The Dr. prescribed Albuterol, to make sure the baby received enough oxygen while I was having the contractions. On the 14th, they hooked me up to the monitors, I was dialated a fingertip, having contractions every 5 minutes. But no progression. They gave me 3 Bretheen shots to stop the contractions and 2 percocet tablets for the pain. It did not work. The contractions continued. On the 20th, dialated to 2cm, monitored...given shot of demerol. On the 22nd, monitored again, bp high, given prescription of loritab for the pain, still having constant 5 min. contractions. the good Dr. sent me home! Needless to say, I am ready to strangle him. Our edd was 7/14/01. On Sat. morning, I lost my mucus plug, come to the hospital they tell me...monitored, I am at 3 cm. but did not progress with hard constant contractions for the hour that they watched me...sent me home again. Sunday the 24th, back at the hospital had been hurting all night, the nurse says that I am a 'good' 3 cm. Maybe I should go to the mall and walk around. I really wanted to kill my dr. at this point. Monday's appt. the 25th. Dr. decides to induce tomorrow am. I am at 4cm. Did I mention that I live an hour away from the hospital? I was sure this baby would come before morning. But amazingly, the contractions stopped, I slept through the night and was well rested at 4:30am when we left for the hospital. We dropped Ashley off at my Mother's. She was going to come to the hospital later with my sister. My mom came with us. The contractions started up again when we were half way there, every 2-3 minutes. By the time we got into the labor room, I was at 5cm. I ordered the Epidural right then! They started to IV, an hour later the pitocin, I was at 6 before they started this drip. But boy! was I comfy with the epi. My sister brought Ashley to us at 8am. By 11am, I told the nurse, I was feeling the pressure. She checked me and I was at 10cm. We had watched a ton of "Baby Stories" on TLC, and decided that Ashley could stay if she wanted to. The dr. had no problem with it as long as she was behaving. She stood on a chair at my shoulder beside her Daddy, my mom stood on the other side to take pictures. The dr. came in at 11:20am. We pushed 4 times and Tyler was born at 11:44am. It was a breeze once we finally made it to the actual delivery day! Ashley loved being with us while Tyler was born, she even demanded that she hold him first. She then passed him to me, before they had to take him to the nursery. She did not want them to take him, so they put her in a gown and let her go too! She is now 4 years old (May 28). Tyler Dylan was born June 26th at 11:44am, weighing 7lbs.10ounces, and 20 inches long, he has a head full of brown hair with blond highlights. As Ashley told me the day we came home from the hospital...now we are a family! You can check out our website at http://ggterri.home.mindspring.com
