Donovan's Birth Story
By Kimberly Grayling

The doctor told me in the beginning after the ultrsound that he would induce me if I hadn't gone by 5/5/01, my due date was 5/4/01 but I am only 4' 9" and had a very small pelvis, he thought I might need a c-section, well on 5/3/01 I went for my last appointment and he said he would wait until 5/7/01, because 5/5/01 was on a Saturday. I went home depressed, told my husband the news, and we left the house, went shopping and stopped by my in-laws. The whole night I was depressed, but knew I would have my beautiful baby someday, I guess I was more excited because we weren't able to tell the sex in the ultrasound. I was also very uncomfortable. When we got home I started having some mild contractions that were not hurting, so my husband went to work, he works mid-nights about 40 miles from home. I took a bath and timed the contractions, they were very regular, and increasing in pain and discomfort as the night went on. I went to bed, and woke up about a half hour later, around mid-night. I was having to breathe through them now, I went to the living room, so I would not wake up my step-daughter, it seemed like I closed my eyes for only a minute, but I was breathing and dealing with the pain, and before I knew it, it was 3:30 a.m. so I called my husband, because they were only 3 mins. apart, he came home and made it in about 20 min. we woke up my step- daughter, brought her to my mom's house, on the way to the hospital, and we were on our way. We got to the hospital around 4:30 a.m., they took a urine sample, hooked me to the monitors and checked my cervix, 1 1/2 cm. They came in and hooked me to an I.V. because I was dehydrated. My doctor came in checked me, broke my water bag, hooked up the internal monitor, and said I would probably deliver around 2:00 - 3:00 p.m. Then the contractions really started hurting, I wanted it over right then and there. Then I started cramping, and had diaphrea. I didn't want to get off the toliet it seemed to be the most comfortable position to be in at that point, but they made me get back in the bed. I then started getting sick, I threw up until I was dry heaving, they came in and said they were putting me in the LDR, so we changed rooms, I don't even remember how I got there, I was then given an enema and was shaved, and they checked me to see if I was ready for the epidural, I was at 3 c.m., so they gave it to me, thank god, I then feel asleep, along with my husband who had been working all night. They checked me two times, first time I was at 5 cm, second time at 8 cm, they then started setting up every thing for the delivery, after she was done setting up, I was fully dialated and fully effaced, the doctor came in, told the nurse to have me start pushing, I pushed for 2 long hours, with no changes, so he came in and said he would help me, I didn't know what that meant until he ordered the forceps, I thought, yes my baby will be here very soon,he gave me an episiotomy, he put the forceps in and started pulling, and I thought I was going to die, it hurt so bad, I couldn't feel to push, because of the epidural, but it seemed like as soon as he inserted those, the epidural had worn off. My son, Donovan Lee was born on 5/4/01 (his due date) at 12:54 p.m. weighing 7lbs. 10 1/2oz. and 21 1/2 in. long. I wasn't able to see him for two hours, I guess he had a hard time getting rid of the fluids, but then I was able to spend the whole night with him until the next day, the peditrician came in checked him, found a heart murmor, did an echocardiogram and found that he had a condition called transposition of the great arteries and a small hole (which actually helped him), he wasn't getting any oxygen to his body because the arteries were backwards, the hole was the only thing feeding his body oxygen, he was sent to the University of Chicago to have open heart surgery, they did the arterial switch on 5/14/01, he is now 3 mo. old and weighing 12 lbs. 7 oz. and is doing great, he was in the hospital for a month, but I am very thankful that they found it before I brought him home, they said if it wasn't caught, he would have died at home. Thanks for hearing our story. Kim & Donovan
