Finally, after 5 months of trying, I found out I was pregant with my 2nd child. I couldn't have been more excited. I only suffered morning sickness for about 2 weeks and everything seemed great except my belly shot out very quick! I was in maternity clothes at only 6 weeks. This was going to be a long pregnancy. I was due December 12, 2000. At 7 1/2 weeks, I started spotting and cramping and panicked. I was in between health insurance as I had just started a new job. My old doctor wouldn't see me because they hadn't receive my COBRA payment. I began crying and telling him I thought I was miscarrying and he finally agreed to see me. I called my mom and had her meet me at the doctor. We did an ultrasound and saw the heartbeat. What a relief!! Everything was fine I just had to take it easy for the next week. I had another ultrasound at around 24 weeks and they changed my due date to 11/29 saying the baby was further along than initially thought. I didn't think this could be since I knew the exact date I conceived. But, if he was coming sooner, that was okay with me! At the 28 week glucose test, I failed and had to take the 3 hour. I failed that one too. I had gestational diabetes. I had a nurse come to the house to educate me on how to monitor my blood sugar 4 times a day and show me what I could and couldn't eat. Mostly what I couldn't eat. I never thought I'd make it to nine months. My sugar was really hard to keep under control and they told me 2 more days of high sugar and I would have to start on insulin. I didn't want to have to give myself shots every day. Meanwhile, I was getting really big so they kept doing ultrasounds. It seemed everything was okay until I was 34 weeks. The baby (it's a boy!) wasn't making breathing motions. As a mom, this sent me into a panick! Doctor kept saying don't worry. The doctor had me coming in every 3 days for a non-stress test and a bio-physical profile. (Bio-physical profile is just an ultrasound but they measure every time they do this. They measure baby and amniotic fluid) Based on the measurements they get, they give you a score. The baby failed the test every time so I had to keep going every 3 days. He failed because he wasn't breathing. I kept hearing, don't panic! I couldn't understand why no one else seemed upset about this! I just kept plugging along until the doctor decided that maybe I should be induced. My blood sugar was still very high and couldn't be controled, I was huge and it seemed like my placenta wasn't going to hold out much longer to sustain the baby. We decided on 11/20 as the date. I went in on Sunday 11/19 for the cervical gel. Within 30 minutes after the gel was inserted, I began having contractions 2 min. apart. I was monitored for 1 hour and then they said "guess what?" I said "I'm in labor?" They said "NO, time to go home" Time to go home!! I was having contractions 2 min. apart! They assured me the contractions would stop. It was natural and they always stop after about 2 hours. Well, I went home and for 3 hours had contractions. I called the doctor and was told just sit it out they WILL stop. Come in tomorrow at 6:00 a.m and we'll start Pitocin. At 9:00 p.m. I had a contraction that was different from the rest. I told my husband to call the doctor, I was going in. He tried to comfort me and tell me to wait until morning when another one hit me. We both reached for the phone at the same time. I called and the doctor said it sounded like I was having a rough time and I could come in to get something to help me sleep and they would induce me in the morning. I got to the hospital at 10:20 p.m. I stalled getting into the bed. I didn't want to sit still these contractions were killing me! I finally laid down and the nurse checked me. I was 6 cm! Now, they say I'm in labor. NO kidding!! As soon as she checked me, my water broke. I was begging for an epidural. She said my doctor had to be here for that. I didn't care what doctor it was just find a doctor! The nurse left to call my doctor to tell her to come in and my husband left to call my mom. Another nurse came in to start the IV when I said "Oh God, I'm pushing". She dropped the IV stuff on the floor and rushed to me (it was so funny to see her panic. Come to find out, this was her first night at this hospital. She was in for a surprise!!) She said "NO, no don't push. Let me check you." She tried to check me but couldn't because the baby's head was right there. Just as I was about to push again, my husband came back. I was yelling "The baby's coming get someone!!!" He said "Don't push, don't push. Whatever you do, don't push" Well, for those of us who know about this kind of thing, THERE IS NO STOPPING THAT BABY!!! I wasn't even really pushing, he was coming out on his own! My husband grabbed the nurse out of the hall and they walked in just in time to see the head delivered. The nurse rushed over and unwrapped the cord (it was around his neck once) and then I pushed out the rest of him. He was born at 10:46 p.m. 11/19/00. No doctor and barely a nurse present. They kept joking about how I was the fasted delivery they had ever seen! Having a natural birth was the most beautiful thing I had ever experienced. Honestly, once the baby was out I just kind of relaxed and breathed deep before I realized I was a mom again! Hunter (the baby) was having a little problem breathing and his blood sugar was low. Even though I had requested he be a strictly breast-fed baby, they told me they had to get formula in him to get his blood sugar up. He nursed whenever but every 3 hours, I had to give him formula as well. His breathing cleared up but they did decide at his birth that I was due 12/12 so he was technically pre-mature. He didn't look it! He was 7 lbs. 14 oz and 20 inches long. He was jaundiced and we had to take him in every day for a bilirubin test to see how much was in his blood. It was so sad to see them trying to "bleed" his feet. There is only so much blood in one little baby. After 2 weeks of the jaundice (which went away on it's own) he is a healthy baby boy. And big! He just turned 8 mo. and is 21 lbs.! His 3 year old sister only weighs 28. On a side note about jaundice and breastfeeding: Moms, don't let any doctor ever tell you that you have to stop breastfeeding to help cure the jaundice. Because there really isn't anything you can do for them, Dr.'s look at anything to try to help. Breastmilk is the best thing for your baby and if you choose to be a breastfeeding mom, stick to and find a doctor who agrees with you. One doctor tried to tell me I had to stop nursing and switch to only formula. This broke my heart because I missed the opportunity with my first child due to illness. I was bound and determined to nurse this one until the end. I cried and cried and finally my husband called and talked to my real doctor who was off that day. When she found out what this other doctor told me, she had a fit! She told me if I wanted to nurse, then I should nurse and not let anyone, even a doctor tell me otherwise. So moms, stick to it and good luck!!
