Eden's Fast Arrival
By Joan Archer

I was told by 2 different doctors I couldn't get pregnant...Imagine my surprise when I found out at 20 weeks gestation I was !!!!!! I never get a normal period, and I was feeling quite sick for a a couple months...I thought I might of contracted lyme disease and I was even tested for it.

My tests turned up negative for lyme disease, and I lost weight...30 pounds, which for me being a chunky girl didn't hurt my feelings, but I was concerned because I never just lost weight for no reason before.

I also had a lot of cramping and I thought maybe my ovarian cysts had returned. I went back to the doctor the day before Valentines day, and told her my symptoms. She palpated my uterus and said, you are either pregnant or you have a very large tumor.

She sent me to the hospital to have an ultrasound. Well, it definitely wasn't a tumor!!! Looking back at me was a 20 week old baby. I was beyond shocked and scared, I had broken up with the babies father in early November, and had been single ever since.

I also have two daughters from my previous marriage, and I worked 60 hours a week to support them. I was beyond frightened and worried, and wondered what I would do, but then it hit me. This was meant to be, and a gift. I had always wanted one more child, and now I was getting it circumstances be damned!!!

I was okay until about 30 weeks I started having symptoms of pregnancy induced hypertension. I was seen weekly, and monitored closely, and for a couple weeks I was fine. At 34 weeks it flared up again, my blood pressure was 140/110 and the doctor put me on aldomet for the blood pressure. I was dizzy, nauseous, blurred vision, and headaches. I could barely function, and working 12 hours a day was hard. At 36 weeks the doctor did his regular non stress tests that I had been getting since the PIH was diagnosed, and the baby wasn't as reactive as she should have been. I went to the hospital to be monitored for the night and to have i.v. fluids. They let me go the next day and I returned the next with my heart racing, and felling very ill. I spent the next 3 days in the hospital, and the dr gave me an amniocentesis to see if the baby's lungs were mature, they weren't so he didn't induce me. He sent me home on strict bed rest and I was monitored 2-3 times weekly in his office. The bedrest did the trick and I made it to 40 weeks. He wanted to induce me because of the PIH and my asthma was also acting up. I went on a tuesday at 4:00 p.m. and they gave me cervadil at 4:50. I had a few cramps and a couple of contractions then it stopped. All of a sudden I got the most terrible mentrual like cramps, but no contractions showed up on the monitor. Within an hour and a half I had dialated 4 cms...The doctor broke my water, but there was none!!! They put me on an internal fetal monitor and an internal monitor for the contractions. Then my contractions started...One minute apart and off the charts in intensity. My mom and this wonderful nurse named Sue, helped me breathe and wanted me to take drugs. I said no to the drugs because I didn't want to be out of it when the baby was born. By 9 p.m. the dr. pronounced me ready to push, and I did...at first I wasn't pushing right but once I got the hang of it, 4-5 good pushes and she was out!!! After only 5 hours of labor Eden Raine was born. I cried, my mom cried, the baby cried it was Beautiful. I started to hemorrage badly as soon as the placenta was delivered, after a push of fluids and shots, and the dr reaching back inside of me, I finally stopped bleeding after four hours. I had to have i.v fluids, and they almost transfused me but I was doing well without it. Eden was 8 lbs 12 oz, and 20 inches apgars of 9 and 9....she is the most unbelievably good baby, and I can't imagine not having her here...I know I was wordy but thanks for listening...
