I have been reading these birth stories for about 5 months now. I finally decided I would submit my experiences with you. My first birth story is from 1990. I will tell you the best that I can remember, as that was quite a while ago. I was 20 years old, married for about 1 year and my baby was due on September 21st, 1990. I had a wonderful pregnancy! I have never felt better. I had no morning sickness and tons of energy! On September 30th (9 days after my EDD), my husband and I were planning on going shopping. I woke up and discovered that my panties were a little wet. Nothing major. I took a shower and we headed to my mom's to meet my brother and his wife to head to the mall. When I arrived at my mom's, my panties were again wet. I decided I had better call the doctor before we head out for the afternoon. My doctor tells me to go ahead and head to the hospital where they can check if it was my water leaking. So off we went! I get to the hospital (this is about 1:00 p.m.) and the nurses strap me up to the monitors and check the leak. The nurse says that no, it is not my water leaking, but they want to keep me hooked up to the monitors for an hour. Well when the hour was about up, they check the liquid again and - Yes! It was my water leaking. I was not going anywhere! At this point I was very excited, but also very scared. I was also starving, as I hadn't eaten yet. I was looking forward to that evening because we were to go over to my MIL's for a turkey dinner with all the fixings! I LOVE turkey!! But as you all know, I had to settle for ice chips. Well, here I sit in the hospital watching T.V. with my husband and nothing is happening. That is until 6:00 p.m. I hear this huge "POP" and I must have jumped about a foot off the bed. I told my mom (who had shown up about an hour earlier) that I think my water had just broke. That's also when all Hell broke loose! The nurse comes in and changes the pads under me. She then proceeds to give me a sleeping pill to take as "this was my first baby and I was going to be at this awhile". I took the pill and before it even had time to disolve, I had thrown it back up! I was now throwing up with every contraction! I asked for an epidural. The dr. tried 3 times to adminster the epi, but could never get it threaded (sure didn't stop him from trying to charge me for it afterwards though!). By 8:45 p.m. I was telling my husband and mother that I needed to push. The nurses were yelling at me that it wasn't time, I could not possibly be ready - WRONG! At approximately 9:10 p.m. I had delivered my first baby - A GIRL! We had thought for sure that it was going to be a boy from what everyone was telling us and when the doctor pulled her out, I actually thought it was a boy (she was just super chunky and had rolls between her legs!). She weighed 7 lbs 10 1/2 oz and was 20" long. Her name is Danielle Renee. Apparently she had swallowed some of the meconium and we had to stay in the hospital for 3 days. She got jaundice a couple days after coming home and had to go to the hospital every day to have her blood tested. She is now a bright, beautiful 10 year old. On to birth #2... I was due to have my second child on February 18, 1994. We had found out via ultrasound that we were going to have a boy! We didn't really want to find out the sex before birth, but we were in the process of relocating out of state and my husband was due to start work there 3 weeks before my due date. My insurance would not cover the birth in the other state, so I would stay behind with my mom and dad and have this baby without the father being present. We thought it would only be right that we find out the sex of the baby at the same time. Well around the last week in January, my husband packed all our belongings into a U-Haul and left for his new job. I moved in with my mom and dad and was due to close on our house on February 17th. My husband and I had also decided that he should take our 3 year old daughter with him, that way I would not have to worry about what to do with her when I went into labor. This was an extremely hard decision, as I had never spent even one night away from her, but we knew it would be the best thing to do. Closing on the house came and went and no signs of labor. I decided that next day (February 18th) that I would do one of my mom's low-impact aerobics tapes to see if that would get things going. I finished around 11:00 a.m. Nothing all day! Well around 6:00 p.m. or so, I started feeling like a tightening in my stomach (I had no idea that these were contractions as with my first birth experience I went right into hard labor - no easing into it). I didn't think much of them until I noticed that they were coming fairly regularly. I called my doctor and he said that when they got to 5 minutes apart, to give him a call and head to the hospital. I had not called my husband yet, as I was still not sure that this was "it". I went to my mom's room and laid in bed watching t.v. with her. About 9:45 p.m., we decided it was time to go. I called the dr. then my husband. It was 11:45 p.m. where he was and I had woke him up. I told him that I would call him as soon as it was over. We arrived at the hospital about 9:55 p.m. I change into my gown and am examined. I don't remember what I was dilated to, but I know it had to be at least 4 because I was going to be getting my epidural right away. I was not having any problems with the contractions, they still were just a tightening in my stomach, but I still had a fresh memory of the agony I went through with my first, and I wanted to be able to enjoy this birthing experience. I remember looking up at the clock when I was bent over my mom getting the epidural administered. The clock read 10:15p.m. The next couple of hours flew by. I was able to talk with the friends and family that came to visit and really enjoy myself. The doctor came back in around 12:45 and told me it was time to push. No urge to whatsoever! I tried my best to push (I couldn't feel anything so I had no idea whether or not I was even doing it), but it must have been the right way! At 1:07 a.m., my son was born! The doctor handed him to me right away and he looked just perfect! I was only in the hospital for a day and a half and I don't think my son was ever taken out of the room except for the circumsision and to get his picture taken. We named him Dane Patrick and he weighed in at 7 lbs. 10 1/4 oz. and was 20" long (only 1/4 oz difference between my two children). I really enjoyed this birth, but would not change either of them. I am now 23 weeks pregnant with my third child! We will not be finding out the sex of this one. I am a little nervous with wondering how this one is going to go, as it has been 7 years since my last one was born. I feel like I'm starting from scratch! I will submit that birth story sometime after November! Thanks for reading my stories, and good luck to everyone out there!
