Hi! I have two sons, but I will tell the birth story of my second son, Brett. I was about 10-14 days overdue when they decided to induce me. At my last doctor's visit, they told me to come in at 3 A.M. to start inducing. I was happy, but at the same time I was petrified. My first son, Shawn, had to be induced because I was about 10-14 days overdue with him, too. Anyway, the hours I spent at home before the induction were total chaos. We had to go grocery shopping, but I locked the house keys in the apartment. So we had to wait for 2 hours for the maintenance man to come let us in. We finally went shopping at 9. Then we had to go do laundry at my husband's mother's house, and didn't get back until 12 A.M. I was so nervous I didn't fall asleep until 1:45. Finally 3:00 rolls around. The nurses started prepping me for induction (I.V.s, enema, etc.) They don't actually start the pitocin until about 5:00. At 7 or so I started having contractions. They didn't hurt so I said to my husband, "This isn't so bad, I can handle this." He says, "That's what you think, you're just starting out." Anyway, to make a long story short, he was right. One hour later, the real pain set in. I couldn't get an epidural, as much as I wanted one, because when I was 18 I fell down a flight of stairs and compressed two vertebrae in my back. All I got was demerol throughmy I.V. which didn't do anything but put me to sleep through contractions. By around 12 p.m. I was in hard labor. I was screaming my head off, having the dry heaves, and wetting myself with every contraction. They said I even donkey-kicked my husband in the stomach at one point, which I don't remember. Fast forward to the pushing stage. When I had my first son, the pushing was the best part.It relieved all the pain. With this one, the pushing didn't do anything but add more pain. It felt like someoe was hitting my pelvis with a hammer. The doctors kept telling me to push, but I kept saying "No it hurts to much." I was starting to tear, so they did an episiotomy without any pain medication. Finally I got the baby's head out. As soon as it came out, the doctor snipped off the umbilical cord which was wrapped around his neck THREE times. Then the rest of him came out. He wasn't breathing so they had to resusitate him. His scores were 6,7,5, so i guess that wasn't too bad. During this time I started bleeding badly. Blood completely covered the floor at the foot of my bed. The doctor gave me a shot in my leg to stop the bleeding. Then the resident doctor proceeded to stitch me up without any anesthesia. The head doctor said there was no need to torture me and gave me some himself. Brett had to stay in the nursery overnight to moniter him, but he was fine. During my hospital stay I kept getting pills and shots to control my bleeding. Then I made the mistake of getting the Depo-Provera shot. The brochure said it may cause irregular bleeding, but it didn't say anything about bleeding straight for FOUR months, which I did. To sum it all up, I lost 40 pounds in two weeks from the blood loss. Brett is now 18 months old. My oldest son Shawn is 4 1/2 years old. Both are healthy and VERY active. Thanks for reading this.
